This may be helpful to someone who is researching the ADAIR - STEVENSON family of York Co. SC in the early days.
Several years ago I had a York Co. SC researcher do an on-site research looking for documentation on James Adair b. June 08, 1790,possibly in York Co. SC.The following was included in a part of her report to me: "The only family that I could find that had a son, James, that possibly could have been born in 1790 was James Adair who married Anne Stephenson. Unfortunately there was no further information on this son, James."
At the time the researcher was searching in the following records: "Joseph E. Hart Genealogical Collection Historical Center of York County York, South Carolina Housed at the Historical Center of York County in York, SC is the Joseph E. Hart Genealogical Collection. Mr. Hart was an attorney who lived in York, SC and an amateur genealogist who searched the York County, SC public records, such as census, deeds, probate, cemetery inscriptions etc. and corresponded with researchers conducting genealogical research on families who lived in York County, South Carolina."
As a follow-up to the above reference...............
On the Rootsweb Message Board, January 11, 2004, the following information about Anne Stephenson and James Adair, of Chester Co. SC ...appeared: (Chester Co. was South of York Co. SC)
From Tom Stephenson : Anne Stephenson b.c1742 married James Adair Sr.,of Chester Co,S.C. found in DAR. records.
Anne and James ADAIR had a son James Adair, Jr. marriedissue: Edward Adair Fowler Adair. William Stevenson of the Turkey Creek Stephensons mentioned "Cousin Fowler Adair" in his memoirs Other children of Anne and James ADAIR married DALE and KENNEDY.
ThisAdair information is from a Genealogical Sketch of the Family of David Stephenson of the Turkey Creek Section of York County, S.C. In his old age David Stephenson went to Chester Co,S.C. to live with his daughter Anne Adair
David Stephenson who settled on Turkey Creek in York County, S.C. is believed to be the David Stephenson who shows up on church records in Old Augusta County, VA.,now Rockbridge. My (Tom's) John Stephenson settled on nearby BULLOCK Creek in York County, S.C. He is believed to be from old Augusta County, Va.
William Stevenson settled in Iredell Co, N.C. The book on William claims that he had a brother,John, who settled in Blackstock which is in Chester County, S.C.
In 1772, four Stephensons sailed with the Rev.William MARTIN from Co. Antrim, Ireland, directly to South Carolina. Several of these Stephensons settled in Chester Co, S.C. These Stephensons used the spelling of "Stinson" All these Stephenson, Stevensons, Stinsons, no matter what the spelling, had in common that they came to America from County Antrim, Ireland and were Presbyterians. The Stephensons originated in Scotland. By the early 1700's there were John, William, James, and Robert Stephenson living in County Antrim,Ireland. I (Tom) believe that the early Stephenson's who came to America were related to one of the above brothers living in County Antrim, Ireland.
Thank you Tom.
I hope this helps some who are researching the ADAIR-STEVENSON line.
