DEATH: (brief abstract of ) OBIT OF MRS. PHOEBE AUSTIN (1879 ?)
Mrs. Phoebe AUSTIN (nee ADAIR) died at her residence in Mendota, Illinois, on Sabbath, June 19th (1879 ?), aged seventy-two years, ten months and seventeen days.
The subject of this notice was born in Canada, Aug. 2nd, 1807.
Moved from her native place to western New York in her 26th year, (c.1833 ?)
was married the same year to Mr. Freeman Austin.
She sacrificed a beloved son on the altar of her country which to her was a great loss as she and her husband were in feeble health and they ought to have had a pension long ago, though she is now far beyond the reach of poverty or pain; safe in the arms of Jesus.
Freeman AUSTIN Snr. .Came to Delaware, NY in 1784. Census: 1800 Middletown, Delaware, NY, 1810 & 1820 Covert, Seneca, NY, 1830 & 1840 Porter, Niagara, NY,
BIOGRAPHY: Delaware County, NY, Freeman Austin is a Captain in Col Knapp's Regiment of the Delaware County Militia. They served on the frontier during the war of 1812. The Frontier is that part of the state near Buffalo and Niagara Falls where the borders of the US and Canada meet. This may explain why he settled for a time in Niagara, NY. His wife came from NJ. He had gone to Staten Island to learn shoemaking and he met her there. Four of his 13 children were born in Delaware and six in Seneca.
