On 16 September 1764, the Crown Governor of NC
patented to Col. John McDowell b. 1743,
(son of James McDowell b.1707 d.1747 Derry Twp, Donegal, Lancaster / Chester Co PA ),
and widow Mary McDowell,
a tract of land on Cleghorn Creek in what was then Mecklenburg Co, NC.
Possibly 1st record of Cleghorn Plantation on Cleghorn Creek and Broad River.
After James McDowell’s death, his widow, Mary, had brought her children to NC, joining other McDowell and McPeters family members
and settling first on Rocky River in old Anson Co NC
then c.1751 on Steel Creek in Mecklenburg Co.
Mary, her son Col. John McDowell and his wife Jane (nee Parks),
were buried in Steel Creek Presbyterian Church burying ground in Mecklenburg Co, NC
