Peter Adair was born at the farm of High Larg, Lochryanside, in Leswalt Parish, Wigtownshire, about a mile from the town of Stranraer.
His father, Mr. William Adair, tenant of the aforenamed farm, was descended from a branch of the old and noble house of Adair of Dunskey, beside Portpatrick.
Peter Adair's mother's name was Annie Gordon M'Neil, daughter of Mr. William M'Neil of Dindinnie.
His maternal grandmother was Annie Gordon who belonged to a branch of the Gordon family of Kenmure.
His ancestors on both sides were farming folk.
When quite a youth Mr. Adair left Galloway and arrived in Edinburgh.
In November, 1862, he entered the office of Messrs. Elder and Bruce, Writers to the Signet.
He was Hon. Sec. and Treasurer of the Edinburgh Galloway Association.
