Ballantrae, at the mouth of the River Stinchar, is dominated by the ruins of Ardstinchar Castle, once home to the Kennedys of Bargany.
The c.1600s "Bargany Aisle" stands in the churchyard where Gilbert Kennedy was laid to rest in 1601 after he was slain in a feud with the Earl of Cassillis.
