Along with my Adams lineage, I have some links to the Crawford clan that came to VA in the 1600s.There is a plantation home called "Tusculum" in Amherst Co. VA that was built in 1730 by David Crawford.Presently, the home may be destroyed by the wrecking ball, making room for another subdivision. The home was the boyhood home for one of our historic American characters, William Harris Crawford. He served as Sec. of Defense and Treas. under President James Monroe and Sec. of Treas. under President James Madison. He was Governor of GA and US Senator from that state. He was a lawyer and judge. He opposed President John Quincy Adams for the presidency in 1824 and was narrowly defeated by Adams.
If you would be interested in a grassroots effort to save "Tusculum," please contact Mary Thompson at They are in need of letters from individuals to save this historic home.Remember, it may be someday an Adams home in need of saving. We need to preserve our American heritage. If it hadn't been for concerned citizens, we would have lost Mount Vernon and Monticello.Your help is needed!
