This is an update to the posting #6270 above.I have much more information, although not all of it has been validated by me at this time.My ggg grandmother was not a MILLER.She was Amelia Monroe HOOPER who m. John CLARK; they had my gg grandmother, Ruth Ann CLARK who m. Fenton B. HALL on 23 Nov 1830, either in SC or GA.Ruth was b. 30 Sep 1814 in GA, prob. Franklin County.Fenton was b. 15 Oct 1807 in Pendleton Dist, SC (later Anderson County).Fenton & Ruth (CLARK) HALL moved in about 1848 to n.e. MS and settled in Tishomingo County, in a part that became Alcorn County in 1870.
Ruth Ann CLARK had two sisters and nine half-siblings:
1.Elizabeth W. [Word?] CLARK, b. 7 July 1813; d. 1885; m. Jesse A. HALL, brother of Fenton B. HALL, Ruth's husband.
2.Harriet Perry CLARK, b. 19 Sep 1818, a Friday, prob. in Franklin Co, GA; d. 8 Jan. 1894; m. Dr. H.V.M. MILLER.Both are bur. in Myrtle Hill Cem, Rome, Floyd Co, GA.This is where the Miller Myth came in.My great grandfather, Virgil Miller HALL, was named for Dr. H.V.M. MILLER (H.V.M. was for Homer, Virgil, and Milton, the poets).
John CLARK & Amelia Monroe HOOPER each had a 2nd spouse.John married Jane REID and Amelia's 2nd husband was James Dickinson WORD, Sr.Amelia and James D. WORD had nine children:Thomas Jefferson; Matthew Franklin; Nancy E.E.; William Cuthbert; James Dickinson; Charles Monroe; Martha Justina Caroline; Sarah Jane; Eliza Amelia.
Amelia's parents were Matthew Brooks HOOPER, Sr. & Elizabeth Adams "Betsy" WORD.Matthew was a son of Obediah HOOPER & Massilva BROOKS.Elizabeth Adams WORD was a dau. of Charles Word, Jr. & Elizabeth ADAMS.Charles was her mother's first husband.Elizabeth ADAMS alsom. (2) Richard Brooks HOOPER, a brother of two of Elizabeth's daughters' husbands -- Matthew Brooks HOOPER who m. Elizabeth Adams WORD andJohn HOOPER who m. Mary "Polly" WORD.A sister of these HOOPER men, Susannah HOOPER, married Nathaniel PERRY, a son of Moses PERRY & Deborah IVORY, and grandson of Nathaniel & Abigail ADAMS.Abigail was a dau. of Moses ADAMS & Lydia WHITNEY.Moses ADAMS parents were Henry ADAMS & Elizabeth PAINE; his grandparents were immigrants Henry ADAMS & Edith SQUIRE; his great grandparents were John ADAMS & Agnes STONE; his great, great grandparents were Henry ADAMS & Rose UNKNOWN; 3rd great grandparents were John ADAMS & Alice UNKNOWN; 4th & 5th great grandfathers were Henry ADAMS & John ADAMS, wives' names unknown.
Supposedly Elizabeth ADAMS (who m. Charles WORD, Sr. & Richard Brooks HOOPER) was a cousin of the presidents.Perhaps she was.If so, there appear to be two connections to them.
John CLARK's parents were William H. CLARK & Ruth GOODWIN.William was first married to Elizabeth SEVIER, dau. of General & Governor John SEVIER of Tennessee.William fought with John SEVIER at the Battle of King's Mountain.William & Ruth are both buried at Alta Vista Cem, Hall Co, GA (their graves having been moved from [prob.] "a family plot").
The erroneous information I had before came from a granddau. of Ruth CLARK & Fenton HALL and this has been a great lesson in not accepting too easily that information is correct just because it comes from a fairly close family member who it seems "should" know.
So Ruth Ann CLARK's family is connected with MILLER in a different way than I'd been told; and with HOOPER, WORD, ADAMS (presumably the relationship to the Presidents is there, but I think a much more distant one than was indicated), FALKNER/FAULKNER, GOODWIN, PERRY (still searching this one), and others.
I have quite a bit of information on these lines now and I'm happy to share anyinfo that might be of help or interest.
