The Davis City Advance, Davis City, Iowa Thursday, April 26, l900
Our school was out last Friday. The closing exercises were held in the Union Church and occupied two evenings, and were said by all to have been the best ever held in Davis City. Their training reflected great credit on Prof. HOWELL and his corps of able assistants, MABEL HORNER, LENNA HALSTEAD, MAUDE BOWMAN and EMMA MARK. On Thursday night the exercises were given by the lower rooms and the children did so well in their drills, dialogues, recitations and coon song, that we cannot mention them personally.
Friday night the High School pupils entertained the audience with music, recitations, and the great local hit, Davis City Court Scene, in which was Mayor Hamilton represented by JOHN HORTON; Roy Brown, lawyer, by LOU HORNER; Ike Evans, Marshall, by OTTO LA POINT; the prisoner by RUBY ARNOLD; the jurymen were R.J. Harmon by JIM HARMON; Dr. Wheeler by CHARLIE WHEELER; Frank Freeman by CHESTER SEVERE; I.N. Jeffries by WILLARD JEFFRIES; Will Burrell by DWIGHT BOWMAN; Jas. Burrell by BERT HOWELL; and Wm. Murray by JOHN ASBACH. This was an original production composed by Prof. HOWELL and was taking. The recitations were good and showed the benefits of careful elocutionary training.
