. Excerpt from HISTORY OF HASTINGS, MINNESOTA: . ..... "[Hastings] contributed two Brevet Brigadier Generals to the Civil War.
• General William Gates LeDuc joined the Army as a Captain in the Quartermaster Corps and provided much of the logistics for many major battles.
• Brevet Brigadier General Charles Powell Adams was a doctor in Hastings.He also published a newspaper called the Hastings Democrat.When the war broke out, Adams closed both his newspaper and his medical practice, and joined the Army as a Captain in the First Minnesota as a line officer, not a medical officer, as he wanted to fight.He was engaged in nearly every major battle of the Civil War in the eastern sector, and was wounded at least 14 times.When the war ended, Adams hung up his uniform and went back to his medical practice...."
