I have found nothing to prove that Mourning was not a Lewis, but I have found nothing that proves that she is.
I think that Lewis is the best guess at this time. Her parents are thought to be William Lewis and Elizabeth Woodson. The family is certainly in the right location for a Woodson to be involved.Much of the land that Robert Adams owned in Goochland Co. was originally owned by the Woodsons.
Almost all of the children of Robert and Mourning (and there were 11 children) named a child William and Elizabeth or Betsy.
Most of this position comes from the Adams researchers.
On the flip side, when you look at the Lewis researchers, you almost never see Mourning listed as one of the children of William and Elizabeth Lewis.
My hope, and I am working on this, is to find a few female-female-female descendants of Robert and Mourning who would be willing to participate in DNA testing. We might at least be able to get a handle on Mourning's DNA and have a shot at tying her to a family.
If you would like, you can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org I would like to get your line from Robert and Mourning for my files.
