I don't think that I am going to be a lot of help for you.
I am not aware of the Robert Adams b.1786 in NC and died in TN.
The Robert Adams of my line who married Mourning Lewis(?) was born about 1690 and died in about 1740 in Goochland Co., VA.
Robert had two sons, James and Robert. Both of them moved further to the western part of VA.
I am not aware of any grandchildren who went to NC.Although all things are possible.
Might I suggest a DNA test.It is not the cheapest way out, but it may save you spending a lot of time going up dead ends.If you have a son, or if your husband has a brother, they could use the DNA test to at least tell you what line of Adams your husband came from. You will be amazed how many different Adams lines there are.The problem is that names like Robert are very common in many of the different Adams lines that are totally unrelated. It cost about $100 for a basic test, but that should get you in the right family line. Then you have some idea where to look.Just a thought.
I did find on Ancestry.com a family of Robert Adams, b. about 1786 in VA, and died 23 Nov 1854 in Giles Co, TN and married to Nancy Wells. She died 4 Aug 1866.They had a son George Bell Adams. It shows his father as William Adams born in Bedford CO., VA about 1730. Married Ann McCormick and died in Davidson Co TN in 23 Sept 1807.Don't have any idea if this is correct or someone's guess.
Robert Adams, the son of Robert Adams and Mourning Lewis also lived in Bedford Co, VA, but the ages of the people in your line would not allow them to fit into those in my line. However, the same general area. That would make your family's DNA results that much more interesting to me.
