Hi Loren,(this was in response to his posting "Homer Charles Adams" in Adams family Genealogy Forum, dated May 28, 2006).
What's your source for Homer Charles Adams? That his parents were Joseph S. Adams and Libbie/Libby/Elizabeth Churchill? And Mabel Vanett was his wife? I did find Oscar Leo Adams.
Lucia Riley Vanett was my great grand aunt. Her entire family were born in East Leroy or Leroy, Calhoun County, Michigan...they all grew up there. Some of the sibs remained, some moved to nearby counties. I have been able to account for them all.
I know for sure that Lucia Riley Vanett and Winfield Scott Vanett (sometimes recorded as Van Ett, Van Etta, etc. so I looked at each one closely to make sure they all match. His father was Isaac Vanette). They were married on 18 Nov 1869. (http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/calhoun/vitals/marriages/dbn/dbn-feb-2011-v.txt).
Together they had 4 children: Clarence, Edna Lavenre "Varnie", Mabel, and Lawrence William. I have been working on Mabel lately and am almost done with her sibs (but not 100% complete yet)and, yes, I do already know that she's married to Charles Adams, according to family records.
I tried using your info. with Joseph S. Adams and Libbie/Libby/Elizabeth Churchill and looked at the censuses closely. I found that their son Charles Homer (or Homer Charles, born in Hart, Oceana, MI) Adams already had some kids in 1990 but was widowed at the time (in 1900, lived in Scottville, Mason County, MI, which is next to Oceana County). The children were: Leo (10 yrs), Ruth (8 yrs), and Camille (5 yrs). Then I found that he and his wife Augusta Louisa Brechline married in 1904 in Muskegon County, which is south of Ocean Co. According to the censuses'10, '20, and '30 (all in Eden, Mason County) I found these children listed as follows: Oscar Leo, Camilla (Camilla Irene), Evelyn, Eva, Marion G (Marian Genvieve), C Raymond. Ruth was probably married by 1910 or died). Now, we have no idea who the first wife was.
I decided to use findagrave just now0 and finally found Mabel A Vanett, and viola! Found her and others in Brookside Cemetery, Scottville, Mason, Michigan. I also discovered that Ruth died in 1905, along with her half brother Gilbert Adams 1904-1905. Both Gilbert and Ruthie were on the same stone.
You mentioned a Charles H. Adams who married Mabel A Vanette on 9 Jul 1889in Clare, Clare, MI. I found this link: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/isabella/isamara.htmhttp://www.mifamilyhistory.org/isabella/isamara.htm. Here it says: ADAMS, Charles B. Age 21, marriage license July 1889. Intended was Mabel A. VANETTE of Vernon twp., This matches your info re: marriage EXCEPT the marriage date and the marriage location was in Clare, Clare County). I find it extremely unlilikely that this is the correct Mabel Vanette due to the date of marriage and also because Isabella County is further north (in central Michigan of Lower Peninsula) and Clare County is just north of Isabelle County. Why get married in Isabella or Clare of all places? Thoughts?? Also, in those days you're more likely to get married to someone who lived closer to where you grew up. I also know that Lucia Riley Vanett had an older sister Amerette Riley Quinn who lived in Mason County (Riverton and Scottville) since getting married to William Rosewell Quinn, so that probably increased the chances for Lucia to meet her man in Mason County while visiting her sister. Lucia's parents William Henry Riley and Edna Mason moved from OH and settled in Calhoun County for decades until a few of their kids moved away to nearby counties.
I "followed" them through their timelines, but just could not seem to reconcile. It is compelling that it's the right family, but I am unconvinced at this time this is the right family for Mabel and Charles. First, I cannot find proof that the first wife was indeed Mabel Vanett and second, I cannot find proof when she died, other than her headstone. Just need to find a death certificate. Hopefully someone on Ancestry.com will come forward with additional info. I'm working on it.
I also looked at another potential family...I found Charles H Adams, 25 years old, in 1900 U.S. Census (in Niles, Berrien County), married to Mabel, age 24, staying with his father Horace Adams, age 63. There was also a little boy named Edgar Adams, 2.5 years old.
I started following these clues and they all add up..Charles H and Mabel Adam's children were:
Edgar Adams b. 1900, Mildred, 1906. Dorothy, 1911, Doris, 1915,, and Catharine/Katharine, 1916. We need to find proof that this Mabel IS a Vanett.
Horace Adams was married to Lottie D. Adams...I believe her maiden name was Winn. I've been able to confirm with censuses 1910, 1920, and 1930....
Here, 1900 census says that Charles and Mabel were married in 1898...married only for 2 years. According to the kids' birthdates,it works too.
This of course still doesn't prove that we have the right Mabel Vanett.
This is all preliminary and as I've said, I've just begun working on Charles and Mabel. Which family? Thoughts?
