Deb:I answered your note about Tabitha White Adcock last week, but did so on my home computer, but it must not have been posted.I am fairly certain that Tabitha White who married Edward Adcock in Granville Co. NC on July 4, 1780 was the daughter of William White.I have not been able to locate William White's estate records and it is not in the NC Archives. William was the son of Jonathan White, and William had a brother named Jonathan White, Jr.I did check the Archives and Jonathan White Sr. did not have daughters, according to his estate papers, that is.Since Edward and Tabitha named their first son William, and he was born about one year after they married, this confirms that his maternal grandfather was William White.Burgess White was an unmarried brother.William Adcock and his first wife named their first son Burgess Adcock. I have found in over 15 years of research in VA and NC for the English and the Scottish and a few others, the first son was always named for the mother's father - almost always. The only exceptions have been when there was a dead brother or dead uncle who died "without issue," - no children. I guess they did this to honor the dead relative and provide him a name legacy. If there were lots of sons, one of them was usually named after the father, and the fourth son after the paternal grandfather.William Adcock named his seventh son Henry Thomas (which would have been after his paternal great grandfather and his maternal great grandfather). Henry Thomas was my great grandfather and he was always called Thomas. The only place the name Henry is given is on two of the children's marriage records and on one of the deeds. Thomas is buried in Person County near the Granville Co. border. Edward and Tabitha named their fourth or fifth son, Jonathan. Two of Tabitha and Edward's daughters named their eldest son Edward. One was Edward Hobgood son of their daughter Mary Adcock who married John Randolph Hobgood.Mary's sons were Edward and "Randall" Hobgood. She had no daughters and died young.
