Re: Adcock, Granville County, NC
Thanks and look forward to your email. Here is what I am looking at:
On Rowland Gooch
He did have 11 children. Some think that the last three Rachel, Susannah, and James T. were children of a second wife Mary Walker for whom we have a bond dated 1790, but no further record of her as no wife survived Rowland.I am not sure I agree that Mary Walker is their children, but would like to know if any from the Adcock lines have an opinion. The Adcocks in Rowland's will would be from his daughter Rachel who married Abner Adock.Rachel's first cousin Amos Gooch is presumably the father some of Polly/Mary Harris' natural born children and Letha Harris who married William Adcock is Polly's daughter and William is Abner's brother.Letha is established a the daughter of Polly Harris who is associated with Amos Gooch, as she is heir to Nancy Harris (died 1825) minor natural born child of Polly Harris whose fortune came to her as a legatee of Amos Gooch (his daughter?).
On Polly & Tyree Harris
I have seen abstracts of the case regarding the estate of John Gooch, son of Rowland, who died intestate. To date that is the only record I have found that indicates Mary & Tyree Harris removed to Tennessee. They do not appear in the census for Tennesse and I have not been able to clearly identify them in the records of Granville.Someone thought the Tyree in Fayette is him, but the age, birth in Virginia do not confirm it.If there are any other records or probate I would like to find a source, as at one point it was "assumed" that Amos Gooch had children by his first cousin Tyree's wife, which now seems unlikely.Additionally I have only seen abstracts of the probate of John Gooch, so the original may need to be reviewed.
On Polly/Mary Harris heir to Amos Gooch and believed to have married Moody Fowler-
The documents that connect the dots here are in the guardian records. It is true that one guardian record names Edna, Mahala, Hillman, and Richard as orphans of Polly Harris in 1829 (per Gwynn's abstracts), but in 1844 we start to find Hillman and Richard listed as "Fowler". As with the Harris orphans William Clement is their guardian (he was Amos Gooch nephew in law).In 1839 Moody Fowler and wife Mary attest to Edna Harris being 21 and then by 1846, we find a Miss Edna Fowler reimbursed for sewing for William Harris (deaf & dumb), son of Polly Harris presumably a natural born child by Amos Gooch as he is named in Amos Gooch's will and his brother John G. Harris list Amos as his father on his marriage certificate. All this implies that Moody Fowler marriage to Mary Harris was marriage to the woman associated with Amos Gooch. The questions are:
a) if Polly the mother of all these children died in 1829, why did her four youngest children take the Fowler name in 1844?Were they children of Moody out of wedlock and acknowledged by him at some point or was she the Mary Harris who married Fowler in 1830 and they took the Fowler name either as his children or adopted? Certainly Edna was born three years before Amos Gooch died, so perhaps Polly had started a relationship with Moody Fowler, but why did they wait to marry until 1830 when Amos was dead by 1822.
b) The youngest Harris/Fowler child may have been born as late as 1825, why couldn't the Polly buried in 1847 and born 1787 be his mother? If the only thing separating Polly and Mary is literacy based on signing, it is known that people sometimes signed and sometimes marked and that a "mark" was not necessarily a sign of illiteracy. Many women were taught to read, so they could read the Bible, but few were taught to write, though many people learned to sign a name or mark.So the source of the literacy/illiteracy issues is important to look at.
c) Susan Harris, Letha Harris Adcock, and Temperance Harris Parrish all become heirs of Polly's daughter Nancy who dies intestate 1825.Nancy was heir to Amos Gooch estate by his will and stated in that will as a natural born child of Polly Harris. Is there any evidence of father(s) for these women?A Mary Harris is found in court in regards to Squire Shearman who may be a father to one of these women. We also find Shelton Hobgood's will providing a gift to Temperance "out of love and affection" though he would be younger than Polly is there any evidence that he is the father.
d) Who is Polly/Mary Harris who had issue by Amos Gooch and others?Do we know her birth family? Is there any oral history. If she is the woman whose gravestone survives, where is that gravestone and could it be contemporary with her death in 1847 (few stones remain from that time and they were often raised many years after the burial).
These people all flaunted conventions of their time and these records provide a rare glimpse into their world. If there is any family oral history that sorts this out it would be invaluable to future researchers and is a colorful story.
Hope I haven't lost the readers in all this!
