OK Guys,I've waited almost a month to post this because I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Nancy & now Robin on the melungeon and ADKINS.
I'm not just some Adkins wannabe either and I come from the same lines as Ronnie does.
My mother was Thelma Ruth Chaffin, raised at the head of Miller's Fork by her maternal grandparents, John Wesley Blankenship & Laura (Huff) Blankenship. Now their property sat below Uncle John Henry & Aunt Mary Margaret (Adkins) Stephens place.Mary Margaret was the baby sister of my gg-grandfather William Tolbert Adkins (son of Allen & Fanny (McNeely) Adkins from Lincoln Co.
Grandpa Bill (William Tolbert) m. his 2nd cousin Martha Ann Adkins (d/o Isaiah Adkins & Mary Jane Toney). After they got married Grandpa Bill & Grandma moved to Blaine, Lawrence Co., KY where all of their children were born & 2 died and were buried.
Shortly after 1900, they moved back to WV to the 'Crockett' area of Wayne Co. where they lived the rest of their lives. They are both buried in the Stephens' Cemetery.
Years ago when Mother & I were doing genealogy together (Mother passed away 19 yrs. ago on May 9, 1984) she made the comment about how dark 'Uncle Pen' was. That's Pendleton Adkins who m. Elizabeth 'Aunt Lizzie' Stephens.
There are other things that we talked about, but if you think about it not ALL of the Adkins' that I know are blonde, blue-eyed, etc.
I also have the bump, shovel teeth (which I know can be NA), but I still think that even though we know a lot about the ADKINS it's still a possibility of having something Other than English & Scots/Irish.
There are just too many coincidences, etc. NOT to at least consider the possibility of some of these other ideas.
We do know that some of the names in Wayne Co. are French and Huegenots, could they have possibly been Converso Jews?? If we're ALL English-Scots/Irish where do some of the darker skin tones come from???
It really doesn't bother me who or what my ancestors were because without THEM I would be someone totally different.
Ok, that's my thoughts on the subject and I'm sure it won't be a very popular one, but then, everyone is entitled to their own thoughts.
PSThe Stephens are also related to me through Uncle Will & Aunt Cass (Ferguson) Stephens.Aunt Cass was my g-grandmother, Laura Huff's Aunt.Catherine Ferguson was the oldest child of Edmund & Mary Jane (Trout) Ferguson.Laura's mother was Juda Ann Josephine Rebecca Evelyn Ferguson, the only child of Edmund & Mary Jane born out in Indianna, who married Henderson Huff, Jr.
I also have ADKINS on my biological father's side.
