EDEN -- Ethel Catherine Radford Adkins, 99, of the Draper area, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 11, 2005, at Morehead Memorial Hospital. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Eden. Burial will follow in Danview Cemetery. Mrs. Adkins was born Sept. 18, 1905, to the late James Willis and Mary Ellen Webb Radford. Joining in 1938, she was the oldest living member of First United Methodist Church was named Mother of the Year in 1980. She was very active in the United Methodist Women and the Home Builder's Class. Volunteer work was very important to Mrs. Adkins and was evidenced by her having volunteered over 13,000 hours for Morehead Memorial Hospital since 1965. She was also honored for her volunteer services there with the Tree of Life dedication. She received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, presented by Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. Mrs. Adkins retired from Fieldcrest Mills in 1965. Surviving are sister Hazel Ferguson of Roanoke, Va.; daughters-in-law, Mary Grace Haynes Adkins of Martinsville, Va., and Lorna Garrett Adkins of Ridgeview, Va.; five grandchildren, Pamela Worley and husband Jerrell of Stuart, Va., Lynn Moreau and husband John of Richmond, Va., Martha Drane and husband Lewis of Martinsville, Va., Eddie Adkins of Dade City, Fla., and Tracey Adkins and wife Carol of Florida; great-grandchild Adam Worley of Stuart, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 12 siblings and her three beloved sons, Maurice E. Adkins, Melvin L. Adkins and Caleb W. "Sonny" Adkins. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fair Funeral Home.
