You mentioned that you originally thought the Agee name was Cherokee but there were none listed on Dawes Roll. I am of the Agee Cherokee line. There are many of us. Our line was not listed because our ancesters lived in Missouri. As soon a Missouri becaeme a state, a law was passed making it illegal for Indians to be in Missouri. My grandmother, Cleora Agee, lived in hidding. She refused to speak of her own Cherokee heritage out of fear. The fear included some physical danger, but it also included fear of her family being removed from Missouri. Because of these fears, Missouri Chrokee did not identify themselves on the censes or any other public listing. I would not give up on the possiblity of being Cherokee too early. Who knows, we may be related.
