I don't think the Agneys who became Agnews are necessarily Scotch Irish for a several reasons.First, there are place names in England named Agney and there are old records of Agneys in England.Second, I have been involved in the Agnew project at familytreedna.com.I'm clearly not related to any of the Scotch Irish Agnews in the group. Finally, my sister found one Laban Agney in the 1880 census and his parents were both from Germany. He was born in NJ and served in the War of 1812.These kinds of biblical first names are prevelant among the NJ Agneys and their progeny. My own ancestor was named Abraham Agney.Agney could very well be a version of Agne which is German. There is really no foundation for the Scotch Irish hypothesis except the name Agnew, and as I said there appears to be no connection there in terms of records or DNA.If you want more info, send me a direct email.
