Hi Debby,
Arthur Ahlswede was my grandfather.I found a marriage record that lists him marrying "Bertha" Keller (who would be my grandmother--their daughter was Luella, my mother) in 1914, but I think that Ida and Bertha must be the same woman. In 1950, 2 of Arthur's grandchildren by his oldest son Ervin (who's mother was Clara, Arthurs's first wife) were killed in a car-train accident. The obit listed the children's paternal grandmother as Ida Ahlswede.
The 1920 census lists Arthur and Bertha, a daughter Irene (10 years old), Ervin, (8 years old), Elsie (4 years old), Alvin, (2 years old), and my mother Luella who was born in 1919.I had known my mother to mention all of these siblings, along with Dorothy, who was born in 1924, however, she never mentioned Irene, who, if she was born in 1910, could have been Bertha's (Ida's?) from a previous mariage, or could have been Arthur and Clara's daughter.
I have some more extremely limited information on Ervin's line of the Ahlswede family, and of course, Luella's line. Please let me know if this would be helpful to you, and if you have any more information on any Ahlswedes that you could share, I would be very greatful. Please feel free to email me personally ([email protected])or reply here.
Thanks,
Mary Hiatt
