1st information: It has been a long time but I believe I may finally have a connection to my Grandfathers line. I finally located a Joseph Aiello who came over from Naples March 16th 1905 on the ship Weimar. But what I did not know was his first name Joseph was in Italian! I have been unable to find him as Joseph for years now. He was listed by Giuseppe Aiello! He reached NY on March 31st of 1905. He was from Serrata, Italy! And to make things stranger...His real name was on his papers! So his name was not changed on the Ellis Island records to Allio as everyone in the family thought. In the US his name became Joseph Allio somehow. My aunt remembers him telling her when she was a little girl he came here when he was 18 to find work. This Giuseppe was also listed as being 18. This Joseph was going to Thomas, W.Va. (Tucker County I think it is now or in tucker) There is something else written about the family I think but unable to read what it says across from his name listing on the far right side. I even used a hand held magnifier on top of reading glasses but it may be in Italian. But on the line just above it says the name Brother Francesco, since the lines are uneven and copied incorrectly when posted it is hard to understand who belongs where.
2nd clue: I knew there was a connection if I could only find it. A few years back I remembered my mother telling me that my grandfathers brother Vincenzo Aiello came over to visit her dad. So I found a Vincenzo Aiello which listed brothers he was visiting. Those names were Francesco, Giuseppe, Domenico. But I shrugged it off since nothing connected me to him. And the fact that no one in the family knew of a Giuseppe connection. (We didn't know Joseph was that in Italian!) So I saved it to my look at it again Ellis Island file. Yesterday, While talking to a cousin, he said maybe use the other name Aiello maybe its misspelled or try Allio, maybe the name is wrong. Well, I tried all of that. So I reviewed that old record again. I realized the only name I hadn't heard was the Giuseppe one. So I pulled up a web site on Italian names...Giuseppe...means Joseph and the meaning was there too. Now, I had something, then I went out and tried the Giuseppe Aiello name and found him coming from Serrata, the only one, and the only one 18. Still I wanted more...I reread both, then I noticed both manifests listed them going to Thomas, W. Va. My grandfather didn't live there but close to it, and my aunt said he went there first from NY to find work as she heard it. So maybe I have found them all. (And my grandmother married my grandfather in 1913 so Vincenzo came over in 1914 a year after their marriage for a visit) Vincenzo Aiello 28 yrs old (line 10) came over from Naples also on a ship April 16, 1914. He went to Thomas, W. Va. He came from Reggio C. Serrata (in Italy) the brothers he was visiting are Francesco, Giuseppe, Domenico, and he is the fourth brother. I have a picture of the four brothers I am trying to connect to. And all the records I have also connect to my grandparents who are known as Pindle and Elizabeth Aiello of Serrata, Italy. Now, I have contacted someone to research my family in Italy and give me a price on it. I have also found my grandfathers social security number and have written to the social security office stating who I am and why I want a copy of his records there. It may list who my grandparents really are if they aren't there as Pindle and Elizabeth. (There is a fee (cost) for this too) My problem in all this researching is everyone wants to charge you for family information that should be yours free. Most of these web sites are where we post our family lines on free web pages, then the sites charge for our information, some may not even have dates or places just names. I have learned most are the same information I get for free. I can't pay all those fees, monthly, yearly, etc. And some may never help me with what I need. GOOD SITES, WWW.ROOTS.COM , WWW.GENEALOGY.COM,WWW.GENEBASE.COM,WWW.COUSINCONNECT.COM, AND ANY GOV, SOCIAL SEC, FREE STATE LOOKUPS FOR PUBLIC INFORMATION. SO BE CAREFUL IN WHAT YOU PAY FOR! I had to prove who I was too. You do not get the information if you aren't family from the social security office. So I wanted to let everyone know so they can find these records too. On Ellis Island the records are free, but you have to read a lot of the same names, different years, different spellings, then pull up the name'scertificate where it lists the ship then click at the top where it says manifest, once the manifest comes up click on the magnifying glass shown under the prev and next spots. Once you do this you can read all the info listed there and when you can't get a giant magnifying glass and your glasses! Now, if only I can get records on my grandfather being in Thomas, W. Va. or connecting to relatives also looking for us. I have also signed up on the genebase for my own personal web page about my family. And when we find a connection we will know we are truly family by blood. So if anyone has these names in their family lines contact me and see if we are family. Good luck to all in your searches. Thanks for all the great help.
