Audrey,
Today I found your query posted April 1999 seeking information regarding the 5 Taber women who married Albros in the late 1700's in RI.
I have been researching the Taber family of New England for two decades, with the intention of publishing an updated and reliable Taber genealogy.I can provide you with the ancestry of Drusilla Taber (m. 1787 Holder Tallman), Rebecca Taber (m. 1793 James Albro), Innocent Taber (m. 1786 Robert Albro), and Sarah Taber (m. 1796 John Albro).
Regrettably, I have nothing conclusive to report regarding the ancestry of Mary Taber of Tiverton, who married Jonathan Albro of Portsmouth on October 21, 1759.I have my suspicions, but at this point can only speculate.I still have some stones to overturn, so I'm not yet resigned to failure in that regard.
One of the things on my interminable "to-do" list is to research Portsmouth probate records for the Jonathan Albro family.Someone has submitted to the LDS Family Search website a "Pedigree Resource File" which states that Jonathan died on 2 Dec 1775, but that seems to be in error, as Jonathan apparently died from a self-inflicted knife wound in April 1788, about the time his last child was born.(The diary of Elisha Fish reports that on April 25, 1788, upon returning to Portsmouth from across the Bay, Elisha "heard of the death of ... Jonathan Albro who about a week before his death had cut his own throat.")
Jonathan Albro was listed as head of household in Portsmouth in the 1782 Rhode Island, with 5 males under 16, 1 male 16<22, 2 males 22<50, and 1 female 22<50.In the 1790 census for Portsmouth, his widow Elizabeth Albro (2nd wife to whom he was married in 1773) is listed as head of the household, with 2 males 16+, 3 males <16, and 3 females.Son Robert Albro is listed nearby with 1 male 16+, 2 males <16, and 3 females.
I don't know if you have the names of all of the children of Jonathan Albro, but the following are recorded as his children by his 1st wife Mary:
Robert Albro, b. 9 Mar 1760
William Albro, b. 11 Jun 1763, killed by lightning 22 Jun 1787
Isaac Albro, b. 3 Sep 1765
John Albro, b. 15 Aug 1767, mar. Sarah Taber
Jonathan Albro, b. 15 Mar 1770
Jonathan's children by 2nd wife Elizabeth are:
Abraham Albro, b. 9 Apr 1774
Jacob Albro, b. 15 Sep 1777
Amon Albro, b. 11 May 1780
Major Albro, b. 2 Mar 1783
Mary Albro, b. 4 Jul 1785
George Brownell Albro, b. 20 Apr 1788
All of the above birth records are from Portsmouth Birth Records, Book 2, pages 67-68 (reported in Arnold's Vital Records of Rhode Island).
Please send me your email address for information on the ancestry of the Taber wives mentioned above. If you have further information on this Albro family, or know of someone who has done further research, I would like to learn more about the family.
Dan
