William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, did have a son named John, but his son died in 1641 and left one child, a daughter named Jane.Despite some rather romantic family histories, none of the Alexander families in the United States is descended from John Alexander, William's son.
Unfortunately, there is a great deal of mistaken genealogy trying to connect various Alexander families to William Alexander, Earl of Stirling, but William's family and descendents are actually well documented in various peerages and in "Memorials of the Earl of Stirling and of the house of Alexander,Volumes I & II," Charles Rogers, Edinburgh, W. Paterson, 1877.
