There were several James Alexanders in Rowan, Anson, and Mecklenburg Counties in the mid-18th century, perhaps most less elusive than the one we dubbed "James of Rowan" to distinguish him from the James who came from Ireland to SC with wife Mary Peden. Joanne Lacy seems to have done some work to eliminate other Rowan-area Jameses as the son of Moses. Although the wives and children of most of the Jameses are established, all that is known definitely about the family of "James of Rowan" is that they had at least two sons in Rowan County. These sons were James Jr and Matthew. There are many hints that the family also included William, Thomas, Ebenezer, and possibly John.
There are at least two possible sources of information on James's family: Presbyterian Church records (for Anson/Rowan NC from about 1750 through some time in the 1760s and for Spartanburg SC from then on) and land-grant records for SC in the 1760s. I understand that any settler could get a grant and could increase the amount of the grant by claiming dependents who must be named. I haven't yet done any of this work myself.
Please post dates, locations, and whatever else you know concerning James and Frances Lott. Thanks loads.
