It's been a while since I've posted and I have a little more information, so here goes: according to census records Joseph was born ~1820 or ~1825 in Ireland. According to my grandfather's birth certificate, he was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. According to his cemetery inscription, he was born ~1831. He was married to Maria McGuire (d/o James, who settled near Georgetown in Halton Co.) some time in the mid-1850s (first child born 1856). Maria was born in Ireland in 1838 (according to her obituary), and 1840 according to the census records. The family lived in Chatham, Kent Co. Ontario
They had 12 children: JAMES(~1856), JANE(~1859), JOSEPH(~1861) who later moved to Detroit to work in the auto industry, JOHN(~1863)-called JACK, GEORGE(~1865), ELIZABETH(~1869)-listed as born in U.S.; called LIZZIE, WILLIAM(~1874), DAVID B.(~1875)-lived in Lancaster, OH in 1925, ALFRED(~1878), MAUD L.(1882)-m. E.A. Menary, lived in Orangeville, MARJORIE(~1883)-lived in Philadelphia, and REGINALD G.(1884)-married Margaret Walders and lived in Syracuse, NY. Unless otherwise stated, the middle initials were A.
Joseph died in 1889. Maria died in 1925 and the only children still alive at that time were Marjorie (not yet married), Maud Menary, Joseph, James (living in Thamesville, Ontario), David, Jack, and Reginald.
The family religion was Church of England. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?
