There may be a connection with the Reedy River Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. It is an old Church and some of the names are on the internet under "Cemetery" and by the alphabet.
I found the following:
"Eva Batson Wade, 88, Rt 3, Duncan Rd, died Friday. B. Traveler's Rest, member Reedy River Baptist Church. Surviving son: General Pinckney Wade of Greenville (found that he was born 1907 and died 2002 in Greenville,SC age 95) surviving two daughters: Miss Dovie Wade (Social Security Death Index (SSDI) b. 1910 and d. 1994 Greenville,SC) and Mrs. Marion McKinney of Greenville thre grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
The Howze Mortuaryat Travelers Rest with burial at Reedy Reive Church Cemetery
The SSDI shows Eva Wade d. Feb 1976, but the newspaper obit wasn't clear about year she died. SSDI shows born 28 Nov 1887.
Eva Batson Wade was widow of Reuben Pinckney Wade, but I could find nothing on him.
under www.google.com "advanced search", "exact phrase" typed in "Dovie Wade" again the Reedy River Baptist Church obituaries came up and showed that she died Mar 4, 1994. Apparently b. about 1910 as she died age 84- was of Homestead Farms, Duncan Road. Confirms as sister of Belle Wade McKinney and General P. Wade, brother.
In the 1880US Census (LDS/Family Search - free site) Thomas Allen b. 1871 SC son of DOWNNE ALLEN AND DOREY ALLEN
Downne Allen b. 1849 SC age 31 farmer parents b. SC
also shown: son Walter Allen B. 1876 SC and Daughter Sallie b. 1879 SC
location: Saluda, Greenville, Sc
This was the only Thomas Allen that seemed to fit the time frame and place.
I searched for Downne Allen and found that it could be spelled various ways: Downey, Downe,Downie,Downy and also Mc Downey - but I could find no other information on such a person or his wife Dorey - Her name may have been Dora, Eldora, Eudora - or any variety of names.
There were 24 Allen families listed in Saluda in 1880.
by using www.google.com" advanced search" and "exact phrase" I typed in Essie Owings and found:
Greenville, SC Clear Spring Baptist Church Cemetery
buried: Nancy Mohlia b. Aug 20, 1918 d. Dec 5, 1931
daughter of Walter and Essie Owings
Essie Owings b. 1900 d. 1973 - no headstone Walter J. owings b. 1896 and died 1969
all buried in Clear Spring Baptist Church Cemetery
This may or may not be kin to your Thomas Allen.
but perhaps your Essie Owings was named after an Aunt or relative -
I found nothing else on these families or Thomas Allen. However, the GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG COUNTY LIBRARY is supposed to be a really good library with lots of good information.Perhaps someone there could help you find more information.
I think I have provided more mysteries instead of answers, but each clue is a help - isn't it!
This is not my family, but many have helped me find my folks.
