Hi Cheryl! This is the same Jennifer Allen, but it's been so long, I've lost my original account email and information. It's great to hear we may have an ancestral connection. I'd love to work with you on discovering the further records available for our Allen family tree. I've posted most of what I know here: http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Maine::allen::21543.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Maine::allen::21543.html
I've been searching for other records, but haven't yet found anything predating William and John's initial settlement in what would become Vienna, Maine (and later Rome, Maine). John and William were amongst the earliest settlers in Vienna, so finding earlier records before the 1790 census is difficult. I have yet to find verified documentation of immigration for them, and have no idea how many more generations may have resided in Maine/Mass. prior to them.
On Mary: Yes, she was born Dec. 24th, 1799 to William and Esther in Vienna. She was their third child. Their first, Daniel, is my ancestor. I would love to find more on William - I have been searching periodically, but with no luck thus far. There are many other William and John Allens, so far none being evidently related to our ancestor. There is a William Allen who settled in the next town over, in Farmington - this is *not* the same man, and has a journal cataloging his family members upon a journey to ME that proves they are different (though so close, and with such better documentation of immigration from England!). I cannot find a definite record of Esther's surname, though I know of two marriage records: one in 1790 near or in Vienna March 22nd 1790, and a second in 1791 to an Esther Laughton - I think this must be coincidence, as it was recorded in Winthrop. The other curiosity was that the 1790 census recorded William as arriving with one child, one spouse. I'm not sure which came first. :) Of course, given the town was just forming, the marriage record may be postdated. This was one fact that helped me weed out some of the wrong William Allens in the near area. The Allen in Farmington had several children already when journaling his journey to Maine.
There is also an Elbridge Allen in Vienna records - he was the son of brother John Allen, who owned the Maine Skewer and Dowel company in Vienna. He was also a pensioner from the war.
I've not yet tried purchasing access to the various genealogy sites, so I may dig up more information from there. I'll certainly let you know if I find more!
It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, as well, Cheryl. :)
