Nancy Cooper, wife of Meredith Allen of Henry County, Va
The will of Frances Cooper stated that his wife Betsy Cooper would have the use of his land until her death. At a November 1811 Mecklenburg court, a chancery case “Meredith Allen, Nancy Allen etc vs. James Cooper etc.“ was opened for the division of these lands among the heirs. Commissioners were appointed and the final division named eight heirs: James Cooper, John Cooper, Sterling Cooper, Elisha Cooper, Meredith Allen and Nancy his wife, Daniel Cheatham and Rebecah his wife, Peter Andrews and Oney his wife, and the children (unnamed) of William Cooper dec'd.
Nancy Cooper married Meredith Allen in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on 09 Aug 1788. They moved first to Ansen County, N.C. and then to Henry County, Virginia. Her husband Meredith Allen's will in 1829 left the use of his lands and slaves to Nancy for her lifetime. She was living with her son Colman Allen on the 1850 census. Henry Co. Will Book vol. 5 p. 617 dated 22 May 1856 provided for the division of the slaves. Henry County Chancery suit “Henry Lawrence etc vs. John W. Austin etc.”was filed for the division of the land. Papers filed in August 1856 state Nancy Cooper died “a few months ago”. These records would indicate that Nancy Cooper Allen died during the early part of 1856.
