Hi Rosie
Re what I know about the Alley family – not much but here goes. What is written below is from letters and bits of paper I found when going through my Dads things back in 1997 after he died. He had started to do family research but didn’t get very far.Like us all I wish I had asked about these things when he was alive.
“The wife of a British Army officer serving in India gave birth to a daughter. The names of these people are not known to me, nor were they ever mentioned.
This daughter married an Irish Army sergeant named Alley and in due course had a daughter who was named Agnes marie Alley. At some stage they returned to England and subsequently Agnes marie Alley married Ernest Edwin Allam. The children from this marriage were, Leonard edward, Gladys, Dorothy elsie and Constance louise” (Constance being my fathers mother).
The above was written by the son of Dorothy elsie Allam
Then on another piece of paper it says that Agnes marie had 2 sisters (older I think)
one called Sarah (may be called Lizzie) who married Herman Patterson and had a daughter Winifred who married a man called Preece
The other sister called Annie who married a man called McGeaghan don’t know what children they had.
I have Agnes marie Allam’s (nee Alley’s) death certificate. She died in 1948 aged 80 (which means she was born about 1868)in Birmingham England her husband was had been a chief steward in the Merchant Navy.
You mentioned Sergeant John died in 1888 his son was born in 1834 – who did this son marry? And was he in the Army in India? As time wise he is more likely to be the one - however if he went to New zealand I don't know - more confusion. My father has the name John above Agnes’s name so as I said I'mnot sure
Thanks for your help and look forward to hearing from you again.
