I have a Bridget Porter who married a Patrick Ryan. She had a son Michael Ryan born 17, Union St, Heaton Norris, Stockport, Near Mancheaster England year 1852. Stockport was then in the county of Lancashire. I need to do an 1851 census check to establish if she is also the Mother of my Great grandfather John Ryan born Ireland 1845. I found her son Michael Ryan in the 1881 census for Darlington. The only Michael Ryan in Darlington Co Durham England in 1881. He was a witness at my Great grandfather John Ryan's wedding. I have Michaels marriage certificate and his birth certificate. He married Mary Ann Doyle born Ireland in 1877 in Darlington. In the 1881 census he had a daughter Mary E Ryan born Darlington. My reason for thinking Michael is the brother of John Ryan my Great Grandfather is that he was a witness at his wedding in 1873. Michael and John had the same father's name given on there marriage certificate Patrick Ryan. In the 1881 census he he was living in Grey St in Darlington and my Great grandfather had previosly occupied the same house. At my Great grandfathers marriage in 1873 it said on the certificate that Patrick was deceased.I have been told that Porter is a Northern Irish name and that Ryan is from the south. My greeat grandfather in the 1881 census was given as being born Ireland. It does not say where he was born. I was able to trace Michael's birth as he gave his place of birth as Manchester Lancashire. I obtained his birth certificate from the General Records Office England. They will have been careful to find a correct match. I have more research to do. My aim is to find out whereabouts in Ireland my Great Grandfather was born. By 1891 neither Michael or John Ryan were in Darlington. Other members of the Ryan family definately emigrated to Canada. However John William Ryan my grandfather son of John Ryan senior was married in nearbye Stockton On Tees in 1904.I have more research to do. sincerely, Jacqueline White PS have just reread you message and realise I am one hundred years out. My dates are correct. After so much writing I decided to post it as it may help find my Bridget Porter but of course will not help you. sincere apologies Jacqui White
