John Allison of Chester Co. PA/Augusta Co. VA
The following is an outline descendant tree compiled by this researcher on John Allison of Chester County, Pennsylvania and Augusta County, Virginia, based upon several years of research of Chester County and Augusta County records.(Some information unproven - please post any additional information not contained in this report, or contact me at: [email protected])
Descendants of John Allison, Sr.
Generation No. 1
1.JOHN2 ALLISON, SR.(UNKNOWN1) was born WFT Est. 1705-1710, and died Aft. 1771 in prob. Augusta or Rockbridge County, Virginia. He married (1) UNKNOWN SPOUSE WFT Est. 1725-1729 in Prob. Chester/Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married (2) JEANY BYERS 09 Mar 1741/42 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, daughter of WILLIAM BYERS and ELISABETH COX.She was born WFT Est. 1717-1722 in Milltown, County Cavan, Ireland, and died Aft. 1771.
Notes for JOHN ALLISON, SR.:
Although records proving the family of John Allison are scarce, some records to point to him having two(and perhaps three) marriages. The name of John Allison's first wife is unknown to this researcher. He was probably married sometime between 1725-1729, either in Ireland or in the Chester/Lancaster, Pennsylvania area.No records exist to this researcher's knowledge that detail his first marriage. After his first marriage, John had five children born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania within about a 7-8 year time period. After the birth of his fourth son, Charles Allison in abt. 1737, John Allison's first wife apparently died within the next few years.Records in Augusta County, VA place John Allison in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in early 1742, about the same time that this John Allison most likely married Jeany Byers, daughter of William Byers and Elizabeth Cox, on March 9, 1742 in Chester County, Pennsylvania (this researcher has not seen a proven record of this marriage).Evidence to support John Allison's second marriage to Jeany Byers comes from the Byers family records and records in Augusta County, VA that cite the migration of the Byers and Allison families from Lancaster County, PA to Augusta County, VA in 1742. (Source "Capt. William Byers (1735-1799) of Chester County, PA, Augusta County VA, Frederick County, VA and York County,South Carolina), web site address http://homepage.mac.com/rentom/tvb/Art/1-24.pdfhttp://homepage.mac.com/rentom/tvb/Art/1-24.pdf)William Byers, father of Jeany died shortly after this migration to Augusta County, VA on Apr. 8, 1742.Records in Augusta County, VA on March 23, 1754, show that the family of Capt. William Byers, brother of Jeany Byers lived next-door to John Allison, along the road from Campbell's School House to Renix's Road.Later records in Augusta Countyin 1762 and 1767 place the location of John Allison's house in the "Middle River" area, next to the Kerr, McClure, Falls, and Buchanan families, most of which married into this Allison family.John Allison and Jeany Byers had three known children, listed in Augusta County, VA records, Martha, b. bet 1743-1746, Jennet, b. 1748 and William (later known as Capt. William Allison) b. 1749.On August 13, 1771, in Botetourt County, VA (which was formed from part of Augusta County, VA in 1769), John Allison and "Jenet", his wife conveyed 110 acres of land, located on the fork of the James River to Charles Allison, John's son by his first wife.Shortly thereafter on March 2, 1773, in Fincastle County, VA (formed from Botetourt County, VA in 1772), Walter Crockett, Margaret his wife, and William Sayers conveyed to John Allison, Charles Allison, Robert Campbell, Alexander Campbell and William Campbell, 450 acres of land located on the headwaters of the South Fork of the Holston River (This John and William Allison listed were most likely the sons of John Allison, Sr., and starts to document the close relationship of the Allison and Campbell families as John Allison, Sr.'s son Capt. William Allison married Mary Campbell, daughter of David "Black David" Campbell (1710-1753) and Jane/Jean Cunningham (c1721-1759)), and John Allison's son Charles Allison married Jane Campbell, daughter of Alexander Campbell (b. abt. 1685 and died in 1758 in Augusta County, VA).Much of the Allison family migrated to Kentucky around 1779 (source: Capt. William Campbell (1748-1800) of Fayette County, Kentucky by Phil Norfleet) John Allison's son, Charles Allison (b. 1737) died in Bourbon County, Kentucky (listed as Virginia by Norfleet), which was formed from Fayette County, Kentucky in 1786) The location of a will of John Allison, Sr. is not known to this researcher, but there is a will of a John Allison in Woodford County, Kentucky (which was also formed from Fayette County, Kentucky in 1789), probated on November 3, 1791, naming a wife Isabella, and childen Halbert, Sarah and Isabella, with executors named as his wife Isabella and a David Steele. If this will was that of John Allison Sr., then it would mean that a third marriage would have resulted, but no evidence exists to this researcher's knowledge to prove this one way or another.

The Elusive Ancestor by Merrill Kenworthy:
"I went searching for an ancestor, I cannot find him still
He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will
He married where a courthouse burned, he mended all his fences
He avoided any man who came..to take the US Census
He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame
And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name.
His parents came from Europe, they should be on some list
of passengers to the USA, but somehow they got missed.
And no one else in this world is searching for this man,
So I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can.
I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed,
but the weather took engraving, and some vandals took the rest.
He died before the county clerk decided to keep records,
no family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts.
To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans,
Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named Jones."

Traditional History - The Norseland to Scotland, Thence to America. The printed page of the primitive family Alison was lost in coming through a century of somewhat remote antiquity. Thus a detailed account is wanting; but we have every assurance that the unwritten history is not to be questioned. Authentic tradition records the fact that the trunk of the family tree Alison, of which so many branches are to be found in America, originated in the far away Norseland. Probably the stock was first set in the snows of the Scandinavian Peninsula, Iceland or Finland. Later from the same source we find that a branch of this hardy plant was firmly fixed in the land of the Scot. The name is not unfamiliar there now (See "The History of England," by Sir Archibald Alison, a Scottish writer and historian, 1792-1867.)
It was from Scotland that Alison - son of Ali - emigrated to America, a little earlier than the middle of the eighteenth century. As nearly as we can tell about this, it was approximately the year 1740 when this subdivided American branch was not only planted, but thriving on the picturesque and beautiful banks of the Roanoke river in North Carolina. Here the three brothers, Nathaniel, John and James, pioneer farmers all, were living, prior to the struggle of the colonists in their war for independence.
CNIDR Isearch-cgi 1.20.06 (File: 3) - ALLISON, AlLyson, Alliston, Alison, Ellison, Elison are all names that I have come across for ALLISON. I have not found Allen or Allenson, but would not be surprized. Where our ancestors were not able to read, the early census takers would use their own efforts to spell the family names. Frequently bias and prejudice would be reflected in the spelling. And perhaps as frequently, as familes fled the old country, they would purposely change the spelling so as not to be easily traced. Based on some studies I have read, Ellison is more frequently changed to Allison, but Allison to Ellison is very rare... although I have found where it has happened. Other research indicates that Allison is a derivative of McAlister family in Scotland, while others feel that Allison was a long standing family of its own. I have seen suggestions that Allison and Allenson could be associated coming from England. Good Luck.

"I looked at your 4 generations and noticed a clue! Three of Lucy Kerr's siblings were married in Augusta County, Virginia. It seems that your John Allison Jr was married abt 1757 in Augusta County, also. John would have been 23 years old at the time of marriage and Lucy (b abt 1736) would have been 21 years old in 1757. Could you check to see what your source on his marriage to Janet is? Perhaps Janet was a second wife that my have been listed in John Jr's will? Except for your reference to Janet, it appears that our information looks pretty promising! Please let me know what sources you have. I would appreciate any information that you may have. I am an Allison descendant, but not of John Allison of Augusta County. I am familiar with this man as my Allison family moved here to Augusta Co., once leading me to belive that my William Henry Allison belonged to the Augusta County family.
At any rate, I thouhgt it might be useful to note that most of the Allison's in early Augusta County records lived in what is now Rockbridge and Botertout Counties.
There are records for these early Allison families in those counties. I never took time to copy them.
My line of Allison's came out of Loudoun Co., VA in one James Allison who was married to Judith Downs. Their son William came to Augusta County about the time
of the Civil War. I have never been able to prove the parents of James Allison, but belive his father may have also been named James.
Hope this helps.

In August of 1769, William Hall is mentioned as having provided a bond, probably in a land transaction, and a month later he appraised the estate of Robert Allison, probably related to John Allison, who owned land just across the James River from William Hall's 1743 Borden land purchase.

Records regarding John Allison, Jr. are very scarce. He probably migrated to Kentucky with his family after living in Augusta County, VA.He may have been married twice, conflicting accounts on his family. The placement of his children may not be positively established until his marriage dates are determined.

Robert M. Allison and William C. Allison of Wilkes County, Georgia, appoint Cutherbert S. Anderson of Frankfort, Kentucky as their true and lawful attorney in fact, to take all lawful means to recover and establish their right and title to certain lands in Kentucky located for John Allison, their desceased father, on military warrants as compensation rendered for services to his country in the war of the revolution.Said attorney to process patents, institute claims against adverse titles, to enter the lands for taxes, and do all matters relative.February 10, 1820.Wittnesses by William Lennard and John B. Kentucky Court of Appeals, Deed Books V-Z, vol. 4, by Michael L. Cook, 1985, pg. 179:
Whereas William C. Allison of Wilkins County, Georgia authorized Cuthbert S. Anderson, late of Frankfort, Kentucky to have surveyed and carried into grant, at Anderson's expense, five entries of land in the country west of the Tennessee River, in Kentucky, containing 1,200 acres and located under a military warrant in the name of his father, John Allison. And whereas Anderson so effectuated the authority as to have surveyed three of the said tracts, viz., one beginning at the lower corner of George Gibson's entry, and on the Mississippi River, one beginning at the southeast corner of John Rodger's entry on Little O'Bion Creek, and one beginning at corner to Matthew Wright's 1,000 acres, John Martin's 1,000 acres and William Pennick's 1,666 2/3 acres on Red Stone Creek, and the said Anderson then departed this life, and since his death his administrator has caused the said to by duly registered. And whereas the remaining two tracts, one beginning where George Wall's entry crosses Clarks River on the upper side, running up the river, entered August 11, 1784, and one of August 14, 1784, beginning where Thomas Clay's entry corners on land Lawrence Muse and others. Now, for the purpose of continuing the objects for which the said Anderson had been appointed and for other purposes, William C. Allison appoints Richard Taylor, Jr. of Hickman County, Kentucky as his true and lawful attorney in fact.November 6, 1824.Recorded by the Kentucky Court of Appeals, November 6, 1824

Note from "Annals of Augusta County", page 43:"The inhabitants of the new county of Augusta discovered before long that living without payment of taxes was not desireable.Poor people could not be provided for;roads could not be cleared, nor bridges built; and, especially, the wolves were multiplying beyond all tolerance. They, therefore, makde "humble suit" to the assembly, and in accordance with their wishes, in May, 1742, an act was passed for laying a tax on the inhabitants of Augusta County. ...each tithable should pay two shillings (33 1/3 cents) yearly..to be laid out by them in hiring persons to kill wolves, etc. in such manner as should be directed by the court-martial to be held annual in the county. What the people had to sell, and where they sold their products, are questions we cannot answer.Probably peltries and such livestock as they could raise and send to market were their only means of obtaining money.""For more than a year a state of war existed between the Indians and whites, but peace was restored in 1744, by the treaty of Lancaster, Pennsylvania".(Filed under Campbell)

From: Cara Franklin [mailto:[email protected]] To: Thom AllisonSubject: Fw: African Slaves.Hello Allison Cousins, I am posting this letter that I received from Thom Allison.I thought thatamong the entire group, we surely have the information that he needs to find his ancestors.I have started through my files, trying to locate any mention of slaves with particular names. It is slow going, and I have only found a few.Wouldn't it be great to have a spot to send this information as we happen upon it. I'll bet Thom would be willing to compile a database, if we send our records to him.Or perhaps we could find a more public way to compile them so other persons looking for their slave roots could findthem. What do you think?

CC: [email protected] - Hi Susan, I keep coming back to the same conclusion on the husband of Lucy Kerr (b. abt. 1736),daughter of John2 Kerr (James1). She married John Allison, Jr., which I estimate was born between 1730-1740. This John Allison, Jr. according to Augusta County records removed to Kentucky.I believe there is enough circumstantial evidence to support Lucy Kerr as a wife (perhaps a first wife?) of your John Allison, Jr.You have John Allison, Jr., b. abt. 1734 as being married to Janet ??? in abt. 1757. Could you tell me what information that you have on this John Allison? and Janet? I just got a copy of the Map of the Borden grant from Joy Reeb ([email protected]), which shows Robert and John Allison purchasing land (Robert purchased in 1747, John Allison purchased in 1748) within 1 1/2 miles of property purchased by John Kerr, on Kerr Creek,in 1743.That property purchased by John and Robert was right next to property purchased by Halbert McClure (1746), Gilbert Campbell (1742), Samuel McClure (1752), Moses McClure (1748), and Nathaniel McClure (1747).From Augusta County records:MAY 21, 1747.(200) John Allison have license to keep a ferry from his landing toHerbert McClures.John Kerr's daughter, Elizabeth (b. abt. 1742), married James McClure, son of Samuel McClure.
In addition, a John Allison had three children baptised in Tinkling Spring Church in Augusta County, VA:Martha, bapt. 9/10/1746,Jennet, bapt. 3/1/1748-9,William, bapt. 4/9/1749.Could these have been younger children of John Allison, Sr?I show no other John Allison in the early records of Augusta County, none listed in the "importations" into Orange County, and no other Allison's that had children baptised at Tinkling Springs. You show a William as a son of John, Sr, but you show a birthdate of abt. 1740.You show William died in Kentucky. Would appreciate information (supporting or contradictory) on this early Allison family. I am looking for any information on Jane Allison and Polly Allison of Washington county, TN. They are the daughters of Robert and Ann Allison in abt. 1760 time frame.
We think that the sisters may have married the sons of William Thornton, William and John. William is supposed to have married a Jane Allison and John a girl named Polly. Both William and John are in Washington county, TN and both men go to MO with Allison families in about 1825 time frame. One problem is that William is supposed to have married Jane in Lancaster, PA in 1782.
The Allisons like the Thorntons are supposed to be from Brunswick, VA in the late 1600's.
I would appreciate any information on any of the folks above.
Thanks

From Goodspeed's History of Tennessee:
During the years 1785 and 1786, but little is known of the transactions of the court, as most of the minutes were lost in the struggle between Tipton and Sevier. It is known, however, that both County and superior Courts were held at Jonesboro, under the authority of the Franklin government for nearly three years, although for the greater part of that time a majority of the people of the County avowed allegiance to North Carolina. It was not, however, until February, 1787, that a Court of pleas and quarter Sessions was established under the authority of the latter State. On the first Monday of that month John McMahon, James Stuart and ROBERT ALLISON met at the house of William Davis, on Buffalo Creek, and organized a court. George Mitchell was elected sheriff pro tem; John Tipton, clerk pro tem., and Thomas Gourley, deputy clerk. John Tipton presented his commission as colonel of the County; Robert Love, as second major, and Peter Parkison, David McNabb, John Hendricks and Edward Simms as Captains. The magistrates appointed from the County were John Tipton, Landon Carter, Robert Love, James Montgomery, John Wyer, John Strain, Andrew Chamberlain, Andrew Taylor, Alexander Mofiltt, William Porsley, Edmund Williams and Henry Nelson.

Dear Jim,
I'm responding to your recent post on the Allison family GenForum page
concerning the Allison family originally of Augusta Co., VA.
I recently learned of a family Bible record stating that the maiden name of
my g-g-g-g grandmother was Jane Allison (1771-1854).Jane was born in
Virginia, married to David Gray (1768-1824), and lived most of her adult
life in Kentucky.I don't know where in Virginia either one came from or
who their parents were.
Some circumstantial evidence suggests that Jane could be the daugher of
Charles Allison and Jane Campbell.
1. There is a gap in Charles and Jane Allison's children between Mary b.
1769, and Sarah, b. 1776, into which Jane, b. 1771, would conveniently fit.
2. John's wife was Anna Gray - perhaps David's sister.
3. According to land records, David Gray and John Allison lived next
to each other in Nicholas County KY.
4. Charles and Jane's daughter Mary Allison married Lawrence
Harrison, also David Gray's neighbor.
5. John had a son named "David Gray Allison."
6. David named one of his sons "William Campbell Gray," Campbell
being the maiden name of Jane's mother. One source I've seen gives William
Campbell as the name of the father of Jane Campbell Allison.
I've written to Susan Allison Willmott, and she does not know whether Jane
Allison Gray was a daughter of Charles Allison.
I am interested in learning if you have any information that would help us
trace Jane Allison Gray's ancestry.I would also like to know what the
source is for saying that John Allison's wife was named Anna Gray.
Please let me know what you think. Thanks,
- Warren Gray

Botetourt County Deed Information: Published deed records of Botetourt County [7] contain the following genealogically interesting transactions re the Campbells and Allisons:
07 Aug 1771: John Campbell conveys 300 acres of land, called "Royal Oak," located on the Holston River, to David Campbell. [Since Royal Oak was the home of "White David" Campbell, he must be the person cited in the indenture!]
13 Aug 1771: John Allison and "Jenet", his wife convey 110 acres of land, located on the Fork of the James River, to Charles Allison.
13 August 1771: Charles Allison and "Jean" Allison convey 305 acres of land, located on the Mill Creek Branch of the James River, to John Greenlee.
Both "Jenet" and "Jean" can be nicknames for "Jane." One of these ladies is undoubtedly the same Jane Campbell, sister of Black David, who, according to Margaret Campbell Pilcher, married a "Mr. Allison." (see my essay on Black David Campbell).
Fincastle County Deed Information: In 1772, Fincastle County was formed from Botetourt and the land settled by the Campbells fell within this new county. The records of Fincastle County indicate that Charles Allison had a mill on South Fork of the Holston. [8] Published deed records of Fincastle County contain the following transaction concerning the Allisons and Campbells:
As mentioned in Section 4 above, in the late 1770’s, Captain William Campbell and his uncles were living in Virginia, on the Holston River in the newly formed county of Montgomery. There are several deeds, all dated 18 August 1779, on file in Montgomery County, Virginia where William Campbell, Robert Campbell, Alexander Campbell, John Allison and Charles Allison convey their jointly owned land on the South Fork of the Holston River to several individuals. Hyperlinked Table 1 summarizes these conveyances.

1793 - July 15 - Benjamin Harrison and wife Mary of Bourbon County conveyed to Jane Allison (widow and relict of Charles Allison) and John Allison, Executors to Last Will and Testament of Charles Allison, late of Bourbon County, all their right, title, etc. to 400 acres in Bourbon County on the north side of the south fork of Licking Creek, in trust, to be disposed of and applied to the uses as directed in the recited Will. Beginning at the lower corner to a tract belonging to Hinkston on said South Fork, etc., by other land of Harrison, etc., which said land Jane and John Allison are in actual possession of. Are we "cousins"?Do you have any information on Martha Allison's or James Logan's families? My grandmother's records show that Logan immigrated to the United States. Her information usually stops at the point necessary for acceptance in whatever group she was interested in - DAR, Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of 1812, etc. She had no further information on the Allisons.
I live in Little Rock, Arkansas. My e-mail address is [email protected]
Hope to hear from you.

Hi, Connie.. You are the first to contact me from this message board! I descend from James' son David and wife Nancy. I do have some information on James, but, not a lot. I have that he married Sarah Beatty Gilmore 1780 in Rockbridge Co., VA and that she is the widow of Robert Gilmore who died by 1778, as she is listed on the Rockbridge tax records 1778 as head of household, and his inventory of estate probated in 1779, also Rockbridge Co., VA. I pulled a copy of this inventory but only Sarah and other Gilmore's were listed - it did not name any children. I received some information years ago on a James Jr. decended from son Matthew who married Sally Fleece. I have not confirmed beyond will and land transfer that this line is correct. Also, it is still undetermined and presumed that Martha was an Allison. The Rev. Criag baptisms were not always done at the time of birth, but more at the time everyone got together to go to church, so her age is a mystery too. However, !
since James Jr. would have to be born at or prior to 1757, then we can assume she would be born bet. 1730-1735. The only Martha Allison I could find in early court records was witness to a McNabb issue in 1749, she would have had to be over 21 to vouch for Andrew thus making her B: 1725. But, that is just a theory. What do you have?? Joan Logan

Hi!
I have some info on Sarah Beattie Gilmore Logan's children with her first husband. Most comes from Lincoln Co., Ky records. Also, from the will of Sarah's father, John Beattie. It mentions granddaughters Elinor and Martha Gilmore. Later in Lincoln Co., Ky there is a record of James Logan, Jr giving his consent for Martha Gilmore to marry Samuel Porter on Dec. 30, 1795. He states that Martha Gilmore is "in his care." Another link is found in the Will of James Gilmore probated in March 1803 in Lincoln Co., KY. In this will James refers to Robert Logan as his half-brother.
I think the Robert Gilmore who married Frankie Ford in KY. was also a son of Robert & Sarah (Beattie) Gilmore. He is shown as going back to VA to sell land in Rockbridge Co..
Robert Gilmore and Frankie Ford had a daughter, Juretta Gilmore. Juretta married Robert Beaty Dawson. He was the son of Elijah Dawson and Sarah Logan. Sarah was the daughter of James Logan, Jr. and Sarah Beattie Gilmore Logan. Elijah was the son of John Dawson and his wife, Charity Wade. John died in Amherst Co., VA. and left land in Ky to his wife and children. Charity arrived in KY about 1800. Six years later she married James Logan, Jr. and her son married his daughter, Sarah. Sarah Logan and Robert Gilmore would have been half-brother and sister.
I have very little info on Martha Allison. The only clue I have to her being an Allison is the name of her son, Robert Allison Logan. There was a Robert Allison who purchased land in Augusta Co., VA in 1747. I have been unable to link Martha to him though. There was a Martha Allison bapt. in the Tinkling Spring Church, also in Augusta Co., Va. The date was 9/10/1746. She is listed as the daughter of John Allison. I don't know what her age was at the time. I have also seen the reference to the Martha Allison you mention, but have no idea if there is any link. There is also a possibility that Martha remarried and moved to MO with her second husband. I have been told his last name was Richardson.
My line is through Sarah Logan, daughter of James, Jr and Sarah.

Hi, Connie.. I have Sarah with three children; James (named for his grandfather James Gilmore), Eleanor and Martha. On the will of James Gilmore 1802 he names his wife Jenny (a Tinsley), brothers in law, Samuel Porter and John Gilbert. The marriages for these two Gilmore girls is found in Kentucky Marriages, Genealogical Publishing Co., Balt. MD. James Logan Jr. married Sarah the widow of Robert Gilmore as proved by a slave Salle who was on the tithables of Capt. Daughtery in 1783, Lincoln County KY Drapers Manuscripts. I have never found a document which showed that James Logan Jr. married a Charity Wade widow in 1805-1810. Where did you find this?
I pulled wills for the Allisons for VA on file in various counties of VA and have not found one that mentioned a daughter Martha or Martha Logan etc. But, I am moving on to the land records of Orange and Augusta Counties, to see what is there. That Tinkling Springs baptismal record is not conclusive as it does not give relationships or ages.
I also tried to use the Gilmore's to make a connection for the Logan line and have only succeeded in finding yet another James Gilmore family! The DAR even has two James Gilmore's of KY with the same service record. The extra James I found had a wife Eleanor in 1783-1797 on the land tax records for Lincoln County KY (on the Dix River). I am starting to believe that the popular Gilmer family and the Gilmore families are unrelated. But, at best, I don't think that Robert Gilmore was in this Logan family. I found him as the son of James Gilmore who married a Martha McElwee. There is another line of Gilmores in Logan/Christian County, KY and he is from PA not VA. That project turned out to be a dead end for me.
Where did you find or who gave you information that Martha Logan Sr. married a Richardson? I have been given this information, too, from a man in Texas, and it was proved to be false. He stills puts this on the Net, but has NO back up. Let me know what you have on this, I am curious. I have an obituary notice from one of Martha's sons in AR and that is what I am using. 'til I hear from you.... Joan Logan

Hi!
I am sure of the link to the Gilmore family through the marriage of Sarah Beattie to Robert Gilmore. I also feel that Sarah's mother Eleanor was a Gilmore. There is that reference by a grandson of John and Agnes Gilmore's of meeting his wife while visiting his Beatie/Beattie uncle in Washington County, Va.
The only "proof" to Martha Logan being an Allison comes from a family sheet in a library in Stanford, KY. The marriage to a Richardson comes from the internet. There is a Logan/Dawson researcher who emailed me that she thought Martha had remarried but did not have a name for her second husband. She appears to have sold her land in KY and that is the last mention of her in records. This researcher also had a feeling that Martha was a second wife and somewhat younger. There is also the fact that she named a son Robert Allison Logan. I found a death date of 1818 for her, but don't know where I found it.
The marriage of James Logan, Jr. to the widow Charity Wade is found in Lincoln Co., KY records. They were married on Sept. 19, 1805. James' daughter, Sarah married Charity's son, Elijah the same year on Dec. 3, 1805. There is also a record of the disposal of the estate of Charity Logan, formerly Wade. It lists her children, including Elijah Dawson.
I have other info if you are interested. Email me direct at

Notes for WILLIAM ALLISON, CAPT.:
There is circumstantial evidence to support that William Allison, son of John and Jeany Allison of Augusta County, VA is the same William Allison that married Mary Campbell, daughter of David "Black David" Campbell. The Allisons and Campbells were mentioned together in many early Augusta County, VA records, with adjoining land and records.William and Mary (Campbell) Allison may have migrated (according to family tradition and some documents) to Kentucky with the Campbells. On Nov. 9, 1792, Governor Shelby commissioned a certain William Allison as a Captain in the 9th Regiment of the Fayette County, Kentucky Militia.William's brother-in-law, Major John Morrison, was also in the 9th Regiment.
