ancestors of Joseph Amy born 1796 PA
I am a direct descendant of Joseph Amy.Joseph Amy was born 20 April 1796 PA; resided most of his life in Harrison Co, IN; married Cassandra Applegate; and died 5 July 1874 in Harrison Co, IN. Any number of us who are descendants of Joseph Amy have been trying for a long time to find out who his parents and other ancestors were.
The purpose of this posting is provide some recent finds, and ask a couple of questions, in the hope of getting more clues to solve this puzzle:
1) Please consider having your DNA tested, especially if you are not a known direct descendant of Joseph Amy, but have the same or similar surname.I had my father's DNA tested at FamilyTree DNA in the hopes that this might help solve the riddle.Rick Saunders, who is a frequent and knowledgeable contributor to this forum, was kind enough to start a website so other Amy descendants (and other people with similar surnames) could post their DNA results. You can find it here: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/amy/resultshttp://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/amy/results and http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/amy/patshttp://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/amy/pats. Although the website has been able to find close matches between some other similar surnames, so far a close match between people with the Amy surname has been elusive.
2) My father's DNA test at FamilyTree DNA found one exact match and close matches with other surnames. If you have any info on the following names, please share:
a) There was an exact match at the 25 marker level (the only exact match) with the surname Jones. This person is a descendant of Private William Jones 593, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroic actions at Rorke's Drift in South Africa (the movie "Zulu" starring Michael Caine was produced about this battle, and Private Jones' exploits are featured in the movie). His ancestors came from Wales, but his descendant doesn't have any info about his ancestors prior to Joseph's time, and so is unaware of any of them migrating to America (of course, some of our ancestors could of stopped off in Wales).Does anyone have any leads pertaining to Jones??Info on Private William Jones can be found here: http://www.rorkesdriftvc.com/http://www.rorkesdriftvc.com/and herehttp://www.rorkesdriftvc.com/vc/tony_jones.htmhttp://www.rorkesdriftvc.com/vc/tony_jones.htm.
b) There was a close match (1 off at 25 marker level, 2 off at 37 marker level) with the Dooley surname. The ancestor is Benjamin Franklin Dooley born about 1833 in Georgia, died before 1900.His mother was Mary Dooley, born about 1799 in Georgia, died between 1850-1860 in Georgia. The researcher believes Mary was an unwed mother, doesn't know who the father is, but both Jones and Pierces (see below) lived in the area.
c) There was a close match (2 off at 25 marker level, 3 off at 37 marker level) with the Pierce surname. I haven't been able to find out more yet, but think the earliest known lineage is John Pierce in the 1800's
d) there was an exact match at the 12 marker level with the surname Musser. Earliest known ancestor was Daniel Musser, born 1793 in Pennsylvania.
3) One story I hear is told in some branches of Joseph Amy's family is that Joseph had a brother named Thomas Amy who lived in Trumbull County, Ohio.I've researched Thomas, and found the following: he was born in Vermont on 26 Sept 1806; married Rahanah Myers on 14 Feb 1829 in Trumbull Co, Ohio; was living in Trumbull Co Ohio during the 1830 and 1840 census; was living in Washington Co Wisconsin during the 1850 census; was living in Steele Co Minnesota during the 1870 and 1880 census with his son-in-law George Gabriel (who had immigrated from France); and died in Steele Co Minnesota on 2 Sept 1884.He had two daughters: Mathilda (born about 1833; married George Gabriel in April 1854; died on 29 March 1878), and another older daughter whose name I do not know.I am trying to find out who Thomas's parents and siblings were.Circumstantial evidence points to his parents being Micah Amy (born Vermont about 1773) and Betsey Quimby (supposedly born NH), and his brothers being Hiram, John, and possibly George.Does anyone have any information on this Thomas Amy and his parents, or are direct male descendants of his siblings?Would really like to find a direct male descendant of his siblings for DNA testing.I can't find any direct connection between Thomas andJoseph, but who knows, there might be something behind the story.Ancestry.com has a lineage for a Thomas Amy, but I'm not sure it is correct or applies to this Joseph Amy.Also should point out that there was a Thomas Amy living in Crawford Co PA while Thomas was living in Trumbull Co, but this is a different person (DNA testing shows the Thomas Amy living in Crawford Co PA is not related to Joseph Amy).
Well, realize this might be as much of a struggle to read as it was to write, but hopefully someone out there can help.
