I'm having difficulty tracing one of the lines of my family. My great-grandfather, Charles William Anderson was born in or around Aberdeen ... and then moved to Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire.I have no idea when this took place.I also have no idea if his daughter, [my grandmother] Bessie Amelia Anderson was born in Tewkesbury or in Scotland.
I have a copy of my father's birth certificate, and it sheds no light on the matter. All the information it gives is the name of his mother and father ... his father's occupation at the time ... where his mother lived at the time.
The marriage certificate of my grandmother, Bessie Amelia, to my grandfather, Frederick Lea, doesn't give much information either. It gives her father's name, but not her mother's ... and aside from general information about Bessie and Fred ... not much else.
I do know from the marriage certificate that she was 20 years old when she married in 1919 ... putting her birth year around 1899 ... but as to place of birth, I'm at a loss.
Is there a "long form" birth certificate? In other words, if I sent away for my father's birth certificate, is there going to be a more extensive version ... one that will give me more information about his mother etc?
I had thought that this might be a way of finding out where Bessie was born ... and thus back through to where Charles William was born and to whom.
I haven't yet visited an LDS centre to search through some of the later census returns for Tewkesbury ... a listing of Charles William on such a return would at least tell me where he was born ... and where Bessie was born.
Unfortunately there is no one left to whom I can ask any of these questions.Charles William died when my father was quite young ... Bessie died when I was quite young and my father passed away last year.
There is an "Anderson Family Bible" and while I have the transcript of what's written inside of it, I'm afraid it's not too helpful. There are many family members names ... but no indications as to birth place ... nor necessarily relationship to one another. All of the women listed are listed only with the surname Anderson ... with no indication of any maiden names.
Charles William was married twice, his first wife having died, and while we know his 2nd wife's name, I have no idea which of the many Anderson women listed in the bible was his first wife ... or if, indeed, she's listed at all. It's all very frustrating.
So ... how do I go about removing this brick wall brick by brick?
Any suggestions? The IGI has netted me little, although because of the confusion as to where Charles William came from specifically that's a problem.Bessie isn't listed with the IGI ... and Anderson is the 8th most popular name in the world, so it's rather like looking for a needle in a haystack.
