Susan,
we have traded notes on Thomas before. If he was the son of James Anderson and Suit Garland then he had a brother John as follows below. This brother was in early Albemarle and then Madison county, which is on a line between PA and SW virginia.I would advise you to look at the area of early Madison County VA before it was formed as a county.
Descendants of John Anderson
Generation No. 1
1.John3 Anderson(James2, John1) was born January 13, 1723/24 in New York City, New York.He married Ann Irvine.

I've been working more on the Anderson Maxwell connection and thought you might be interested in this.It conflicts somewhat with the info you've already got on the webpage, and supports other parts of it.This is from the Maxwell History and Genealogy and Allied Families by Florence Houston, 1916.The book is still available through inter-library loan and is also available for purchase through Barnes and Noble at $100.Anyhow, here's what a Maxwell researcher sent me:

The will of Samuel Anderson (son of John Anderson & Anne Irvine):
Madison County, KY, Wills A-351

and my niece Betsy Campbell, certain live stock; my clothing to my brothers William and
Isaac Anderson, to my sisters, Margaret Maxwell, Rebecca Crawford, Mary Campbell and

to my brother James Anderson, who I make my executor. William Brisco and David Maxwell,

The will seems to pretty well confirm the lineage of John Anderson & Anne Irvine.
Hope someone will find this helpful :-)

Just saw your web site. I have a GGGGrandfather named William Morrison who moved from VA to KY about 1795. He married Betsey Anderson in Madison County, KY June 3, 1796. Census records in KY indicate William was born in VA. Through deductive reasoning I have concluded that he was from Amherst county. I noticed in the 1783 census that there was an Anderson in Amherst Co. Perhaps the Morrisons knew the Anderson's before moving to KY. I am trying to establish with 100% certainty that William was from Amherst so I can find out who his parents were there. I would also like to know more about Betsey Anderson. If you have any info that would help me trace my roots through Betsey and William further back in VA, I would appreciate hearing about it. John R. Morrison
12 xi. Samuel Anderson, born 1776; died March 18, 1806 in Madison County, Kentucky.
