Who is Amelia Anderson Waggoner?
In spite of extensive documentation there is still room, it seems, for some confusion concerning the family of Colbert Anderson, Jr. of Berkeley Co., WV and his wife Ann.So
I have been reexamining the extensive probate records for
this couple.I will say the Colbert Anderson's will is
very explicite on this point -- there are a total of nine
children designated as heirs and there are five sons very
clearly named as William, Providence, James, Thomas, and
Colbert. That leaves four (4)daughters.In addition to the
will itself we can examine the estate account records to see who received payments as heirs of Colbert Anderson which
gives us another fix on the names of the daughters and their husbands. For example the payments made 11 May 1813
include: "cash to George Knup who married Rebecca Anderson one of the heirs$82"; "cash to Mrs. Ann Anderson guardian to Mary and Ann Anderson two of the children of C. Anderson
$165"; and "cash paid to John Kerney and Elenor his wife said Elenor being one of the heirs of C. Anderson dec'd $65"
In those three entries we have the names of all four daughters: Rebecca Anderson Knupp, Elenor Anderson Kerney,
Mary and Ann Anderson.Amelia is nowhere named as an
heir or daughter of Colbert Anderson, Jr.
However, a few years later Mrs. Ann Anderson, widow of
Colbert Anderson, Jr. dies and her estate enters into probate c1823.In this case there is, I believe, no will
so all legal children (or their children) can claim an
equal share of the estate. This includes all of nine children of Colbert Anderson, Jr. as listed above except
now Mary and Ann are also married. The surprise is that
there is now, it seems, a fifth daughter -- Amelia.
Actually Amelia is deceased so it is her sons, Andrew, William, and John Waggoner, who are to share in the Ann
Anderson estate. It seems that Amelia Anderson, wife of
Thomas Waggoner, is a legally recognized daughter of Ann
Anderson but not a child of Colbert Anderson, Jr.
Since the Andersons and the Waggoners were near neighbors
in the Bunker Hill community this marriage would point
to Amelia having been around if not in the Colbert Anderson household. If we guess that her age was not too different from that of her husbandit is quit possible that she was born before Ann's marriage to Colbert Anderson. The eldest son, William Anderson, was born in 1774 according to his tombstone.
