Is it a town or county?

The information I have been using for an ancestor is Butler County, Kentucky.I have found there is a town Butler, Kentucky that is not in Butler County, Kentucky.
Is there a way to find out which it is/was?I haven't found proof of his father, multiple listings for the same name, none of which is the Butler location.Thanks for your help.
