ATHELSTON ANDREWS STUDY OF COMMON GIVEN NAMES WITHIN THE ANDREWS FAMILY GROUP
Over the years there has been significant uncertainty about several branches of the Andrews family. Updated research indicates several different Andrews families on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and those out of Surry Co., VA that don't appear to have a common ancestor within the United States. Because of early unsupported research, most family lines have connected themselves to William and Mary or Martha Blount.
A group of Andrews family members have come together to try and sort out these Andrews families. They have tackled the problem through historical research, DNA analysis and have added study of common family names.
The Andrews family this study focuses on are A. Athelston Andrews (1761-1839) B. Warren Andrews (1699-1772) C. William Andrews (bef 1719 -1771), father of Green, Gray (1744-1811), Abraham (1745-1805), Averilla and William (1740-1824) D. William Andrews (-aft 1824) presumed to be the son of William (bef 1719-1771) and father of the Texas Andrews brothers Green, Reddin, Micah and Richard.
There has been conjecture that Athelston Andrews (1761-1839) is the youngest son of William Andrews (bef 1719 -1771) but many researchers consider this to be unlikely as Athelston was not mentioned in William’s will.
William Andrews (D.) has long been presumed to be the son of William ( bef 1719 -1771), however, others have questioned this since the first child of William (D) that has been identified with certainty is John, born 1783, and the last child being Warren, born 1816, making these children born when William was 40 to 60+. Additionally, family lore tells of William (D.) having 12 to 15 children and many wives, so perhaps it is William’s first children that we have not identified.
As an aid to solving some of these mysteries, the group of researchers decided to look at given names to first support the idea that these families were all related and if not brothers probably cousins. The first name we reviewed was Athelston.
It appears after some research, that within the United States, the given name Andrews is used almost exclusively (if not exclusively) within the Andrews family. The accompanying chart shows the Athelstons (and variation Thelston) that occur within the various family branches. Athelston Andrews (1761-1839) appears to be the source of the name. The next use is about 20 years later (4 occurances within the same time frame), seemingly with family members named after the original Athelston. And, it should be noted that Athelstons appear in each branch of the family identified above (A-D), occurring within the Warren Andrews branch, the William father of the Texas Andrews branch, the sons of William ( - 1771), specifically Gray and Green, and of course, the original Athelston. This certainly supports the thesis that these are all members of the same family.
An additional effort is underway to establish family relationships through DNA testing. Currently, we know that descendants of Warren Andrews (1699-1772) and descendants of William Andrews (father of the Texas Andrews) share common YDNA. Further tests of known descendants of William Andrews ( - 1771) and ofdescendants of Athelston (1761-1839) are currently underway and results should be known soon.
