Phil, Since my last message I've found out more info on Ida Smooth and Benjamin App. My mother is still alive and has a very sharp mind. She hasn't missed a bit of info yet! Her father, my grandfather, Bernard W. App was married to Ida Smooth. My mother said Ida died in a fire but doesn't know the details of the accident. She said she remembers hearing people talking about Ida.
Ida and Bernard had 2 children: 1. Mary B.App 1894-1967. She had a child Herbert Lee Pitts in 1915 I've found no records of Mary marrying a Pitts yet. Mary married Sam Greene at some point.Mary is in Portland Cemetery Section B. She's also in the Lou. Directory: 1915 worked as a stripper at J.Stier and Sons and lived at 2318 W.Market and in the 1921 Directory she lived at 1527 Rowan. The 1527 Rowan address is where Katie, my grandmother died at. She had TB. 2. Clarence William Edward App "Bill" 1/17/1901-1/30/1986 death cert#03564 married first Rose Routenbush and had two children and strangely both are named Clarence. One is Clarence Joseph App 1922-10/16/1966 death cert#24074.He died from cancer. The other son is Clarence Edward App 1924-still living in a nursing home. Clarence Sr. next married Georgia Ogle and had one son, again with the Clarence. His name is Clarence William Edward App Jr. 1947 and is still living. I am in contact with this Clarence. He goes by the name of Billy. Clarence Sr. and Georgia Ogle are buried in Resthaven Cemetery on Bardstown Rd.
After Ida died in the fire, Bernard married my grandmother, Katharina Ida Eichert "Katie". This is my part of the story.
Phil I have plenty on the App family if you're interested. The confusion regarding Benjamin and Bernard is, I think settled now. Bernard is my grandfather's real name. The proof I have that he was called Ben or Benny comes from the 1880 census. On the place where Bernard's name should be is a Ben born exactly when Bernard was born. There is no actual name Benjamin nor Bernard on the census. Next I have the birth record of Clarence William Edward App Sr. I copied from the Filson Historical Society on 3rd St. It doesn't have Clarence's name but it says,"Jan.17,1901 App male, Maple 21st and 22nd father Benny, moher/maiden Ida Smooth/App." This is Clarence Sr's birthdate. I have yet to find any more info on Ida.
So if you have questions or comments please let me know. Jennet
