I am youngest of three sons of John B. Appel, Jr. I have information stored in a book created by my father a few years back. It is not easily accessible at the momnent, but as I recall, his father, John Sr., was born in Pittsburgh as well around the turn of the century. Johhn Sr. married Marie Breisinger (spelling?). Their only child, John Jr., was born March 6, 1920. John B Appel Senior's parents were both born in Munich, Germany, and came to the US in the late 1800's. His father's name was Bernard. John Sr. served in the US Army infantry in WWI. He missed going to France with his unit as he was hospitalized with the flu (Spanish infuenza outbreak). Am told that 90% of his unit was killed in France. My father, John Jr., served in the US Navy in WWII... serving mostly in the Pacific. He crossed the Pacific three times during the war. His ship was in the South Atlantic for a short period. During that time, he was responsible for repairing the ventilation system on a captured U-boat, which the British were then able to take back to England. John B. Appel Jr. died December 1, 2006.
