Have been trying to find a little more information on these 3 ladies that are said (in my notes) to be daughters of Nathaniel Appleby & Charlotte (--?--) of Otsego Co., NY. Nathaniel was born around 1797 and his wife Charlotte around 1803. I believe Nathaniel had other wives/or at least one other and that E.Melissa, Lucy, and Maria had other siblings.
All three of his daughters married Burnsides (I am a descendant of the Burnsides and Houghtons of Maryland NY from the late 1700s to my Mom who was raised there (as was her mother,.. and her grandmother,. and,... ugh - it's a lot of material and the records are in hard to obtain places if they exist at all,... still looking for the keeper of the records of the Second Owners of the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Maryland,.. the Potters. The current owners do not have the plot maps for most of the cemetery.)
Anyhow Lucy & Marie m. brothers; their paternal line was: Gloud T. < Thomas < Gloud < and John of Clogher Ire.
JOHN P. BURNSIDE, b. April 16, 1827, New York State; d. February 09, 1921, New York State; m. LUCY APPLEBY, June 03, 1850. Lucy was b. Aug 20 1833.
Notes for JOHN P. BURNSIDE "of Maryland, Otsego Co., NY".He is buried in the Maryland Cemetery in Maryland NY (which used to be the McKown/McKowan Cemetery located very close to the old Morehouse homestead that is now a landmark.Lucy is buried with him, she d. 4/25/1915. BBD has his birth as 4/16/1829. I found his grave w/ his brother Washington & Maria Appleby (all sharing the same headstone). I am putting the dates I saw on the stones rather then that which I have found recorded as different dates elsewhere.
Notes for LUCY APPLEBY:
I have learned of only 2 of their children: Eva Annette Burnside and Edward D.Burnside provided by BBD.
Children of John P. & Lucy Appleby:
Eva Annette Burnside b.~1857, probably in Otsego Co., NY.
Edward D. Burnside “Eddie” of Maryland, Otsego Co., NY was b.Mar., 1859 probably in
Maryland NY. He m. ~1876 to MARY J. HAMMOND (b. 10/1855 in NY d. 1930* according to BBD), she is bur. in the Rose Cemetery in Maryland (according to BBD). He d. 12/02/1937
and is bur. in the same place as his wife. His death record # is 77647. They had at least one dau.:
Fawn M. Burnside b. July 1882, probably in Maryland, Otsego Co., NY. She m. on Nov. 15th, 1905 to Guy Chamberlain in Milford, Otsego Co., NY. Guy was b.1880 & d. 7/31/1920, also said to be in the Rose Cemetery. Fawn d. 1954 & is bur. with her husband.
Known children of Fawn & Guy Chamberlain:
Marcia B. Chamberlin
Edward G. “Eddie” Chamberlin
I found Eddie D. & Mary J. Hammond buried not far from Lucy & Maria Appleby. My cemetery notes show that Mary Hammond b. 1855 d. 1936,.. they are all buried together in The Maryland Cemetery (Not the Rose Cemetery). The Rose is way down the road from there. Eddie, Mary J., Guy & Fawn all share the same headstone.
WASHINGTON BURNSIDE, b. April 25, 1833, New York State; d. June 01, 1912, New York State; m. MARIA APPLEBY, Abt. 1857.
Notes for WASHINGTON BURNSIDE:
(W25) (note coincidence of names of Maud & Grace,.. see with George R. Burnside -- notes imply that George may have had a wife previous to Eleanor because Amanda Maud & Grace R. were living in Laurens with their Uncle Ephraim and their father George in 1870,.. there were no women in that household that could have possibly been a wife.)[[ I don't know what the deal was there and probably never will,.. plus I just realized that this entire paragraph probably didn't make any sense if you haven't researched Burnsides at all ]]
Washington was probably born in Otsego Co. I didn't find their children. His death record is #29-60. I assume Maud & Grace were married because they were not among the "Burnsides" I had found in that cemetery but could have been there with a different surname.
Notes for MARIA APPLEBY:Maria & Lucy Appleby were sisters. Maria Appleby was dau. of Nathaniel Appleby & Charlotte (--?--), Charlotte was b. in Connecticut. Maria was b. Nov.5th, 1835 and d. 2/14/1921 (according to the headstone).
Children of Washington & Maria Appleby:
Maud Burnside b. ca 1867, probably in Otsego Co., NY
Grace Burnside b. around 1869.
EPHRAIM DEWITT6 BURNSIDE (EPHRAIM DEWITT5, EPHRAIM4, WILLIAM3, GLOUD2, JOHN of Tyrone Ire.1) was born August 1838 in probably in Otsego, Otsego Co., NY, and died December 17, 1917 in intestate, in Otsego co., NY bur. in Mt.Vision Cem..He married E. MELISSA APPLEBY Abt. 1863, daughter of NATHANIEL APPLEBY and CHARLOTTE (-?-).
Notes for EPHRAIM DEWITT BURNSIDE: (E135),.. "Jr. of Otsego Co., NY" -
He served in the Civil War in 1864 in the First Engineering Regiment; BBD also reads "he d. intestate, in Otsego Co., NY and is bur. in Mt. Vision Cem." - What is intestate?
Notes for E. MELISSA APPLEBY: E. Melissa was born 1842 OR June 1845 (according to BBD).
Children of EPHRAIM BURNSIDE and E. APPLEBY are:
AMBROSE BURNSIDE, b. btw. 1861-65, Milford, Otsego Co., NY.
MABEL BURNSIDE, b. Abt. 1870, probably in Laurens, Otsego Co.,
CLAUDE BURNSIDE, b. April 1877, Otsego Co., NY.
LEA NORA BURNSIDE, b. Abt. 1879, Milford, Otsego Co., NY; m. FRED J. RIDER, January 17, 1900, Milford, Otsego Co., NY. Also known as "Leonora”. Fred was a farmer. His marriage to Leonora was witnessed by Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Rider.
Any informatin on these 3 ladies would be appreciated,.. that from whether their father remarried after his first wife died or if there is an error here associated with E.Melissa being their dau (what "E." stands for in her name?) Siblings? The names of the children of these women would even be nice. The Burnsides seemed to normally have many (I mean many) children or very few. Since many were farmers of usually very large farms and timberers, I'm sure the extra hands for help (i.e. children) were of great importance. My Houghton family owned the saw mill in that town and up until my g-Uncle Harley Houghton the trade continued.
Oh well, guess I've put enough here to make someone recognizable, if anyone. Would love some insight even though they were cousins of my 3rd g-grandmother who's line was John < Gloud < John of Ire.Am curious about Nathaniel Appleby's parents, I haven't found anything. Thanks for taking the time to review this, hope to hear from you,.. .Rebecca
