Clayton R. Applegate was my Great Grandfather he enlistedin the Union Army on Aug. 15, 1862 and was discharged at Nashville, Tenn., on June 14, 1865. At enlistment he was 5' 9" in height , had light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was wounded slightly in the left hand at the battle of Chicamauga. He was promoted to 5th Sergeant on August 1, 1864. Clayton participated in the battles of Stone Mountain,Mission Ridge and in Sherman's Campaign. He died of acute indigestion, his brother Ebenezer was at his side. He is interred at Oologah Cemetery, Oologah, Oklahoma.He passed away in 1914.
