There is absolutely no written record that I know of, only the oral history.Of course, we know that after telling a story over the period of several generations, it can change. His second name could have been John and he went by that for all I know.
The only possible links to "John" that I have found are the following:
Aaron Brown Applegate named his second son John.
James Harvey's son, George Washington Applegate (my ggrandfather), named his son from his first marriage John.
Elizabeth's fourth son was named John.
Of course, John was a very common given name so I am not reading too much into the naming patterns.
