I am looking for any information on Elias Applegate and his father, David Applegate, both of New Jersey ---Elias Applegate was born in 1846 (NJ but not sure which town) and married around 1870 to Susan Elizabeth Wood, from Danbury, Connecticut. (She is in the 1880 census records as Elizabeth.) Elias appeared at age 14 in the 1860 Fed'l Census --(Monmouth Division, Manalapan County) andin the 1880 Fed'l Census on RandolphSt.in Freehold, NJ. (also Monmouth County.)He served during the Civil War in the 35th Regiment, NJ Volunteers, Company H.He had 2 brothers killed in action during the Civil War --their names may have been Joseph and Benjamin (?) and a sister (Mary or MaryAnn?), who died as anurse in the Civil War. In the 1880 census, he was listed with his wife and 4 sons. He may have worked on a farm owned by John Denise. Elias and his family moved to New Haven, Connecticut, about 1884.Elias died in 1903 and Elizabeth died in 1939, both in New Haven. David Applegate, the father of Elias, married Maria Cassler (? spelling).Maria was listed as a 55 year old widow in the 1860 Fed'l Census for Monmouth, so she was born about 1805.David and Maria probably married around 1830-32.David died sometime after 1846 but before 1860.It is possible that David was from Tom's River area. It's like these Applegates appeard from nowhere--other than the census, I can find no birth, marriage, death, or cemetery records for them.I would appreciate any information to tie my line into the rest of the Applegate clan!
