Hello Betty, I have at last gathered that St.Helens is not well covered on the I.G.I.The following is all the information we have managed to discover about our APPLETON ancestors.
My g.grandfather came to Australia in the 1850's.From the Birth and Marriage certificates in Australia we have the very meagre and often confusing information. His name:-William WEBSTER APPLETON> (all of his children have the name WEBSTER APPLETON : i.e. Alfred WEBSTER APPLETON (b.Victoria 1862.) etc.
The certificates vary with:dates of birth from 1837-1839. places of Birth - Lancashire; St.Helens;or Liverpool. father: Peter APPLETON - builder. mother: Ellen PENKETH
The only William APPLETON on the I.G.I whoseems to fit is William APPLETON born to Peter APPLETON and an Ellen. at Little Leigh, Cheshire. no reference to PENKETH or WEBSTER - in fact the descendents think she was Ellen Moore.
I also found a marriage between Ellen PENKETH and Peter WEBSTER in 1831 at Prescot nr. Farnworth, Lanc. - no mention of APPLETON.and no sign I have found of any childred.Or a remarriage of Ellen to a Peter APPLETON
Our lack of knowledge was partly caused by this William Webster APPLETON running out on his wife and four childred in the Victorian goldfield area. Thanking you,Margaret BROOKES (nee APPLETON)
