Here's some more detail about my antecedents. Please let me know whether we have anyone in common.
Robert Appleton was born about 1867 in Whorlton, Yorkshire and died on 6th March 1945 in Skelton. He married Sarah Jane Legg on 11th August 1888 in Rosedale.
Sarah was born about 1867 in Ugthorpe, Yorkshire and died in 1951 (possibly on 26 November but I haven't been able to confirm that date).
They first appear in Skelton in the 1891 Census living at 5 East Parade. By the 1901 Census they have moved to 4 Woods Yard. They subsequently moved at least once more because they ended up living at 30 Park Street (where Robert died).
Their children were: Laurence (b.1888), John (who died as an infant), Fred (b.1891), Eva (b.1893), William Thompson (b.1895), Lily (b. 1896), Jessie (b.1900), Annie (b.1903), Alice (b.1905) and James Henry (b.1907). Fred was my grandfather.
Thomas Appleton was Robert's brother and was born about 1865 in Whorlton, Yorkshire and died on 11 May 1940. He married a lady called Margaret from Crewe, Cheshire (possibly Margaret A Poole).
They first appear in Skelton in the 1891 Census living at 5 Yeoman Street. They appear to have settled here as they are still at that address in the 1901 Census.
Thomas and Margaret's children were: David William (b. 1886), Mary Hannah (b. 1888), John E (b.1890), Martha (b.1892), Violet (b.1894), George Thomas (b.1896), Florence Ada (b.1897) and Arthur (b.1900)
John Appleton (known as Jack) was another of Robert's brothers and was born in 1868 in Whorlton, Yorkshire. He married a lady called Annie from Stanghow, Yorkshire(possibly Annie Elizabeth Wilson).
They first appear in Skelton in the 1901 Census living at 30 Green Road.
John and Annie's children were: Emma (b.1894), Robert (b.1896, killed in action in France during 1914-1918 War) and Edith (b.1897)
The father of Robert, Thomas and John was David Appleton. He was born about 1825 in Whorlton, Yorkshire and died in May 1906 and was buried at Whorlton. He married Hannah Thompson on 5 June 1852 at Whorlton. Hannah was born about 1828 in Whorlton and died in Nov 1890 and was buried at Whorlton.
David and Hannah's children were: George Thompson (b.1859), Thomas (b.1861, d,1863), William (b.1863), Thomas (see above), Robert (see above), John (see above)
The father of David was Thomas Appleton. He was born in 1792 in Whorlton, Yorkshire and is presumed to have died between 1851 and 1871 (he's in one census but not in the other!). He married Jane Hugill on 31 December 1822 at Whorlton. Jane was born about 1797 in Whorlton and died in Nov 1890 and was buried at Whorlton.
Thomas and Jane had the following children: Robert (b. 1823), David (see above), William (b.1827), Thomas (b.1829), Henry (b.1836), James (b.1839), Ann (b.1842), John (b.1844)
And that concludes this brief summary of my Appletons in Skelton.
Look forward to hearing from you again, regards, Peter
