I recently discovered a book which contains information on the family of Joshua Appleton of New London, CT.The book is called, The Diary of Joshua Hempstead, A Daily Record of the Life in Colonial New London, Connecticut 1711-1758
There are many spelling and grammatical errors which are typed exactly the way Joshua Hempstead wrote. See below.

She died yesterday. Mon 26. fair Cold. i went to Long Island to Court. got to Southold before night. Tuesd 27, I went to Shelter Island. I Lodged at Shelter Island att Jno Haven'ts. Wednensd 28. I went toSouthampton to Court with Simon Rumsey. Thursd 29th. wee agreed with Simon Rumsey to give him 230 pounds to be pd 100 in April 1717 & ye Rest when wee Recieve ye farm wch may be any time within 4 years as he Shal See Cause he giving us 6 months Notice. fryday 30. I went to Easthampton. Rainy at night. Saturd 31. Stayed at Easthampton. I Recd 5 pounds of Abiall Car for Jonat Hill

I watied for a wind to Come home till Monday ye 16th of this Instant & then I got over with Capt booth. I brought over 3 bushll wheat wch I bought for 3s Od p bushell Tuesd 17th fair. Capt Roswell Saltonstall Died this morning about Sunrise having been sick about 12 Days of a Nervious fevar at his Brother Gurdons and it is Remarkable that he was taken Sick the Same Day of the month of the Govr was & died the Same Day of the week & Lay in the Same Chamber & Corner of it (vizt) & Died ye 20th Exactly 14: years. he was an Incomparable well Disposed Gentleman a good Christian Exaplary in his Living orderly & good Every Relation. he came over here on a viset & as it were on purpose to Dy here. he was taken Down ye Same day he came into Town. not Extreamly bad at first but Encreased gradually. aged 36..

Cloudy (In the foren). I was at home. aftern fair. I Rid out to Rid out to Jno Plumbs Lot & to See Corn adm is hilling. I went to mamacock to See Appletons Grass & home to Raking hay. Joshua a Mowing all Day. be began below the well and mowed all by the all Day. he began below the well & mowed all by the wall up to ye Ledge of Rocks in the orchards.

p. 455 July 1746 Tuesd 15 fair. In the foren I went out to Crossman Lot & helpt adam get a Ld of Wood for Ms appleton. aftern at home haying. Josha mowd by ye peartree & this way also.
p. 457 August 1746 Wednsd 20 a little Rain in ye morn & then Cloudy & hot. I was at home in the forepart of the day Mending the out side fence of ye orchard & towd night I Rid out to Jno Plumb Lot & drove out my Red Steer yt was Impounded by Ms appleton for which I am to give her a 1/2 bushel of Corn at harvest. I mened up Some fence & Set up one Length.
p. 458 1746 August Fryd 29 fair most of ye day & cold N W Cloudy & Some Squalls of Rain. I was at home foren & then out to Crossman Lot to help adm get a Ld of wood for Appleton. I fetcht my gr Horse fro the Comon pastur I had yesterday the Malancholy Tidings of the Death of my Granson Robert at So-hold last Sunday about 7 yr old very Suden well & dead in 2 or 3 hours.

In the Morning Early I Rid over to Mr appletons Mamacock to fetch home the Cows that was left there on Saturday night but Reason of the Rain & the Tide was up very high & Coming back near the west Side the Sorril Mare that I Rid on got out of the path on to hte March & Mired her Self & fell down all over in the water & I fell of on one Side & wet my Self almost all over but I got not Hurt in falling only very wet.

In the foren I was in Town. adm was drawing up the Rest of Mr Tillys frame. aftern wee went out to Crossman Lot & Cutt Some poles & Carryed them & 12. 3 holed posts to mamacock to mend mr appletons fence. 8 sheep that was pounded yesterday & put them into Crossman Lot & mended up the outside fence & the Stackyard fence att mamacock. Joshua had ye Team to Cart 6 Cord up for Mr Cardall. aftern Iwent + plain with the Team & adam Carted home a Ld of poles that he Cut to day. fatting Cattel to Mamacock & Cows. Thurs 22 fair. I as at home foren. in the aftern Mending fence att Mamacock Appletns Salt medow Next Stubb Medo. News is come by ye Post of the Death of my good friend John Winthrop Esqr of this Town in London of Great Brittian where he hath been Ever Since Ju 1726. he Sailed from hence in July .21. years since aged about 66. he was the only Surviving Son of Majr Genll Wait Winthrop late of Boston Decd. last week Died Deacon Daniel Denison of Stonington near about ye same age & also Capt George Philips of Midletown about 70 years of age & it is Remarkable that he died on the day he was to have been married to ms Blague of Saybrook. p. 496 September 1748 Mond 5 Cloudy & a Small matter of Rain. I was home all day. a fine Rain in the Night. Raised ye brook. Run over ye Bridge. Tuesd 6 Wet in ye morning a little & then fair. I was at home most of the day. Stopt Some Leaks in ye backside of the Roof of ye old hosue Garret. towards night I went ot Crossman Lot & fenced in ye Salt hay Staks on Apletons Land (then) now Sold to Mr. Stewart.

I was at home most of the day Indisposed. however I walked up to the prison in order to get Thos Stubbinsout & have bargained wth Samll Powers that if Said Stubbins will make me (40 Rod Of) Stonewall yt I will pay him the Sd Powers 20s for Each rod he makes (before the first of April next) & find him a Team to draw all ye Stones. I also agreed with Mr Appleton to do so by him.

I was at home al day. thursd 13 fair I wa at home most of hte Day. toward Night I went up to /thos Sticklands & Maried his Daughter Anna unto Wait Wells Son of Thos Wells of Groton. Late home. Mr Appleton was buryed. Died yesterday morning aged above 60. fryd 14 fair. I was most of he Day & Late in the Eve at Mr. Delamores house Writing for George Hendry late of Burlington now of this Town. Maried to Ann the Daughter of Geo Buttolph Decd.
