John Esley Arney is my great great great grandfather. He was born in Lincoln County NC in 1845 to Reuben Henry Arney and Elizabeth Carpenter. I've located him on the 1850 Census in Lincoln Co. with his parents, older brother Philip, twin brother "Jones" (actually Jonas) and younger brother Jonathan. In 1864, he enlisted with the Conferderate Army and fought with the Catawba Braves - the 46th Infantry, Co. K. He surrendered at Appomattox in April 1865 and was back home in time to marry Sarah Pitts in 1865. They lived in Catawba in 1870 but were in Glen Alpine NC by 1880. They had 4 or 5 children, including Isabel, Edward, David and Adolphus. There's also a "Polly J." buried with her parents, but I suspect she's the same as Isabel.
My great grandmother is Carrie Arney, born in Glen Alpine in 1888. She's living with her grandparents, John Esley and Sarah, in 1900, along with Edward Arney, Will and Carrie Pitts, and a couple of other children. On her marriage certificate 5 years later, she said her mother was "Bell Arney," who was deceased. No father is listed.Family oral history says she is illegitimate, which is consistent with this information, as well as Isabel being Polly J.
I'm looking for any information on John, his Civil War service (with his brother Philip), his twin, and of course his granddaughter. I'm not even certain who Carrie's parents are, though based on that marriage record of hers, it sure does seem like Isabel is her mother.
