Lew,
Thank you so much for the information. The more I read, the more convinced I am that there is a STRONG connection between this family and the William and Martha Jackson I am looking for.In Russell County, VA, there is a death record for a Martha Jackson, born 8 Jan. 1826, died 23 Oct. 1915.It states that she was born in Wythe Co, VA, the daughter of William Arnold and Sallie Aker. Also, there is a Confederate Pension application by William Jackson filed in Russell County, VA, which lists as witnesses Winton Arnold and Andrew T. Aker (husband of Malinda Arnold?).These men are listed as able to attest to Jackson's military service and current disability. It also claims that these men have known William Jackson 40-60 years. The same information was also given on a pension application filed in Washington Co, VA.
My Jacksons are listed in the 1880 census of Wythe County, living in the Lead Mines section. The family did leave Wythe County, coming to live in the Tumbling Creek section of Saltville, which is in Washington County, but I believe they also lived in Russell County for a time, because my great-grandmother, Cornelia Jackson (daughter of William and Martha) married James Walker Havens in Russell County, VA.
Also, before her death in 2005, my grandmother told my aunts that we are related to Arnolds.
I will keep you updated if I get any more new information. What you have given me is wonderfully helpful.I really appreciate your assistance!
