Gabriel Arthur is said to have been the first white man to travel through Cumberland Gap.This is recorded in several books...one is
"The Journey of Needham and Arthur", by Wood.

I have found him in 1684 obtaining 100 acres on the Appomattuck, Indian Town from Thomas Bates and in 1890 in Charles City County on the south side of the Appomattuck, land from John Bannister.
