Among the earlier settlers of MO were the families who were in Cooper's Fort, including the Coopers, Wolfskills, and (I believe) Ashcrafts; this would have been in the early 19th century.(Capt. Sarshel Cooper was killed at Cooper's Fort 06 Apr 1815, from my records.)
The Wolfskill clan there was my ggg-grandfather, Joseph Wolfskill (Jr.), his wife, Sarah (Reid) Wolfskill, and their 13 children, the oldest of whom was William (born 20 Mar 1798 in Madison Co, KY), and the youngest of whom was Milton (born28 Jan 1819, near Arrow Rock, MO); this Milton was my gg-grandfather -- more on him below.
One of the other sons was Mathus (born 11 Aug 1810, Howard Co, MO); another was named after Capt. Cooper -- Sarshel Cooper Wolfskill (born 18 Feb 1818, Howard Co, MO), and another son was John Reid Wolfskill (born 11 Sep 104, Madison Co, KY).
In examining some archived letters from the son of John Reid Wolfskill (Edward "Ned" Wolfskill), I find in a letter to Mrs. Josie Peterman, dated 09 Aug 1927, Winters, CA:
...This nephew was the son of John Wolfskill,
who was also one of Uncle Mathus' children. You
probably know that Uncle Mathus married Miss.
Permelia Ashcroft of Howard County, Missouri and
came to California in 1850.Aunt Permelia
Wolfskill, raised me from infancy I having lost
my mother when I was but three months old....
And another letter from him to a different cousin, Sue Amick, dated 15 Oct 1929:
...Now concerning the relationship between myself
and Edith Irene Wolfskill, whose remains were
found in the bed of the Creek not so far from her
home. She was the daughter of John Wolfskill,
and John Wolfskill was the son of Mathus Wolfskill
and Permelia Wolfskill, Permelia Wolfskill was a
sister of Mrs Elizabeth Hickerson the mother of
Uncle Hoss, Hickerson.Mrs Mathus Wolfskill was
an Ashcraft. - Permelia Ashcraft)Uncle Milton
Wolfskill, married an ashcraft also- Mahala
Ashcraft- she was a sister of Permelia and
Elizabeth, Mahala died in Missouri. Her son Sash
came to California, with my Uncle Sash Wolfskill
and his family.Uncle later married again here
in California, and raised quite a family. There
are two of Uncle Milton's children living- one
in New Mexico, one in Los Angeles, California, So
Edith's father was my 1st cousin....
So:My gg-gf, Milton Wolfskill & Mahala Ashcraft were married 19 Sep 1844 in Howard Co, MO.Salient events subsequent to that:
* 29 Sep 1845, Howard Co, MO: Benjamin Franklin Wolfskill
* 07 Mar 1847, MO(I think): Sarshel Cooper Wolfskill born.
* 29 May 1848, Howard Co, MO: Benjamin Franklin Wolfskill
* ca. 1847-1848: Mahala (Ashcraft) Wolfskill dies.Younger
son (Sarshel Cooper Wolfskill) sent to live with his
uncle (also named Sarshel Cooper Wolfskill).
* 1848: Milton leaves MO to go to CA, where his eldest
brother (William) is in Los Angeles, and an older brother
(John Reid) has a rancho near the present town of
Winters, CA.He settles near the latter for a few years,
remarrying (Ann Sweany, my gg-grandmother) -- I am told
(but have been unable to confirm) on 20 Feb 1860 in
Solano Co, CA.
* 16 May 1850: Mathus, Permelia (born 10 Feb 1810), and
surviving children leave MO to CA, also settling near
John Reid Wolfskill's rancho for a time before moving to
Mankas Corner (near current town of Fairfield, CA).
* early 1852: Sarshel Cooper Wolfskill & family head to CA
via the Isthmus, including nephew Sarshel Cooper
Wolfskill, but losing their 2nd-oldest son en route (to
fever, if I recall correctly). They also settle near
John Reid Wolfskill's rancho.
I have been unable to determine answers to the following:
* When and where were Mahala and Elizabeth Ashcraft born?
* What are their (and Permelia's) parents' names?
* What caused the deaths of Benjamin Franklin Wolfskill
and Mahala (Ashcraft) Wolfskill?
* When did Mahala (Ashcraft) Wolfskill die?
(There are some family stories I've heard that may have some bearing on part of the above, but I don't want to bias anyone else's perceptions.)
