The purpose of this message is to see if any ASWELLs are interested to see if the origin of Solomon and Hiram ASWELL could possibly be tied into one of the ASBELL/ASBILL lines of NC, SC, GA, TN, KY, TX, etc...I have seen reference to and have been told that the Aswells actually sprang from a branch of the Asbells/Asbills and had changed their name and went their own way because of a family dispute. This is possibly just a folk/fairy tale but then again possibly not.(Solomon is a common name within the Asbell/Asbill lines)
I am the co-administrator of the ASBILL/ASBELL Y-DNA surname study conducted through FamilyTreeDNA.This study currently is comprised of 10 members who have been tested with the following results :
3 - distinctly different Haplogroups indicating individual origins before the use of surnames - probably thousands of years ago.
3 - lines of ASBELLs and 2 lines of ASBILLs who are not related to each other within the time surnames have been used.
1 - AZBELL line currently being tested - results due by 6/30
All of the above from an Asbell/Asbill line that supposedly had a single progenitor from England b. ca. 1685 from England to NC? abt 1700.
ALSO - an Asybll and a Asbel have been found to be connected with a fairly recent common origin in Ukraine.
Obviously there is much more spadework to be done here!
I would like to invite any interested ASWELL researcher to consider joining this Genetic Genealogy effort - keeping in mind that a strong, documented paper trail is a necessity for getting the most usefulness from the DNA test results.
At best you may find a link to move your genealogy research back in time many years - at worst you will disprove any recent genetic relatedness to several Asbill/Asbell lines and will have begun to establish the unique haplotype markers characteristic of the ASWELL clan if it is indeed a separate individual surname.
If any have a further interest in this adventure please feel free to contact me either on this forum or via private message. Thanks for your time in reading this.
